About Seney, Michigan
Seney is an unincorporated community in Seney Township, Schoolcraft County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on state trunkline M-28. It began as a railroad stop in 1881, boomed past 3,000 people during the white pine logging era, and now has fewer than 200 residents. Today it is best known as the gateway to the Seney National Wildlife Refuge and as the town where Ernest Hemingway's 'Big Two-Hearted River' opens.
History of Seney
- Seney began in 1881 as a stop on the railroad line running between St. Ignace and Marquette, later part of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic.
- The Alger, Smith Company began logging the surrounding white pine in 1882 and other companies followed, making Seney the center of the region's logging industry.
- At its peak the town held roughly 3,000 people, with about 21 saloons, 10 hotels, a church, general stores and several hundred houses, plus lumberjacks from 15 or more nearby camps.
