About South Arm, Michigan
South Arm Township is a civil township in southern Charlevoix County, Michigan, named for the south arm of Lake Charlevoix, which reaches from its northern border down to the center of the township. It had 1,939 residents at the 2020 census across 32.7 square miles, about 2 square miles of that water, and it borders Antrim County on the south and west. It has no downtown of its own - the city of East Jordan absorbed the settlement of South Arm - but it does hold one genuinely notable property, the 1926 Porter estate at Elm Pointe.
History of South Arm
- Solomon Isaman pioneered settlement in 1867, buying 80 acres. He had a general store running by 1873 and became first postmaster when the post office opened November 23, 1874.
- The township is named for its location along the south arm of Pine Lake, which was renamed Lake Charlevoix in 1926.
- Historic settlements within the township included Dwight, Intermediate, Nelsonville, Sedan and South Arm. The South Arm settlement was absorbed into East Jordan; sources disagree on the year (Wikipedia's township article says 1877, its East Jordan article says the village absorbed South Arm on incorporation in 1887).

- John J. and Eva Reynier Porter Estate / Elm Pointe, 01787 M-66 South - a 1926 Colonial Revival house with outbuildings on about seven acres of Lake Charlevoix frontage, with original furnishings intact. On the National Register since 1998; now a public park and museum.
- The south arm of Lake Charlevoix. Lake Charlevoix covers 17,200 acres and is the third-largest inland lake in Michigan.
- The Jordan River, which drains South Arm Township among four Charlevoix County jurisdictions. It was the first river designated under Michigan's Natural Rivers Program and is known for brook trout.
