Southfield is a northwest Detroit suburb in Oakland County that grew from farm township into one of the nation's densest office markets, with roughly 27 million square feet of office space second only to downtown Detroit. It is Metro Detroit's broadcast media hub and a historic showcase of mid-century modern architecture. The city is home to a majority Black population alongside large Chaldean, Jewish, and Armenian communities.
History of Southfield
- The area was surveyed in 1817 under a plan by Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass, and John Daniels settled the land in 1823, with early families arriving from Birmingham, Royal Oak, New York, and Vermont.
- The township was first organized as Ossewa Township on July 12, 1830, then renamed Southfield Township seventeen days later, taking its name from its position in the 'south fields' of Bloomfield Township.
- A U.S. post office was established in 1833 and the first town hall was built in 1873.
