About Village of Clarkston, Michigan

Clarkston is a tiny, tree-lined historic town about 34 miles northwest of downtown Detroit in Oakland County, its half-square-mile downtown packed with 19th-century architecture, boutiques, and destination restaurants. Though it carries the unwieldy official name 'City of the Village of Clarkston,' it is the smallest city by land area in Michigan. Just outside its borders sits Pine Knob, one of the busiest concert amphitheaters in the country, which gives the small village an outsized cultural footprint.

History of Village of Clarkston

• First settlement was a shanty built in 1830 by a New York squatter named Linux Jacox; Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill in 1832.
• The Independence post office was moved to the community on December 12, 1840.
