About Walker, Kent County
Walker is a Grand Rapids suburb in Kent County that wraps the larger city to the north and west, best known nationally as the corporate home of retail giant Meijer and cleaning-products maker Bissell. It grew from Canadian-settled farm, orchard and plaster-mining country into a commercial and manufacturing hub, and it incorporated as a city in 1962 largely to stop Grand Rapids from annexing it piece by piece. Its Standale district and the vast Millennium Park anchor local life.
History of Walker
- Organized as Walker Township on December 30, 1837, the second township established in Kent County; it originally covered all county land north of the Grand River.
- First settlers are generally credited as Samuel and Lydia White, who came to Kent County from Canada in early 1837.
- The original 1867 township hall was later annexed into Grand Rapids in 1959, part of the pressure that pushed residents toward cityhood.
