About Walled Lake, Michigan
Walled Lake is a compact Oakland County city about 32 miles northwest of Detroit, named for the mysterious stone 'wall' that early settler Walter Hewitt saw ringing part of the lakeshore in 1825. For roughly four decades it was metro Detroit's playground, home to the Walled Lake Amusement Park (1929-1968) and the Walled Lake Casino ballroom, where big-band and rock legends performed until fire destroyed it on Christmas Day 1965. Today it is a residential lakeside suburb of about 7,250 people.
History of Walled Lake
- Ojibwa and Potawatomi peoples inhabited the area until around 1830.
- First settler Walter Hewitt arrived in 1825 and noted what appeared to be a stone wall along the western bank of the lake, possibly built by the Potawatomi, inspiring the community's name.
- The Foster Farmhouse, built in 1833, served as an Underground Railroad refuge for people escaping slavery en route to Canada; it was relocated to Riley Park in 1997 to save it from demolition.

The Walled Lake Economy
- Once driven by lakeside tourism and its amusement park, the city today is primarily a residential bedroom community of metropolitan Detroit.
- It anchors part of the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools district, a major institutional presence, and lies just east of Wixom and north of Novi in Oakland County's job corridor.
Community Life in Walled Lake
- Later performers at the Casino included Chuck Berry, the Four Seasons, and a young Stevie Wonder, right up until the 1965 fire.
- The Walled Lake Amusement Park featured rides such as Fred Pearce's 'Flying Dragon' roller coaster, 'The Pretzel,' and a Tilt-a-Whirl, and was a favorite for company picnics.
