About Wolverine Lake, Oakland County
Wolverine Lake is a village of 4,544 people (2020 census) inside Commerce Township in western Oakland County, and it exists because of the lake it is named for. A quarter of the village's 1.68 square miles is water. It is a settled residential lake community rather than a commercial downtown, with an older median age (45.1 in 2020) than most of its neighbors.
History of Wolverine Lake
- Before 1918 Howard Stuart and L. A. Green proposed damming several small streams to create a larger lake. The village's own account credits the idea to Dr. Stuart, a local dentist and developer, while walking along the culvert that crossed the road where the dam now sits, in the spring of 1914.
- The dam project was completed in March 1923, and by the end of that year the growing community petitioned to be named Wolverine Lake.
- The lake was formed by flooding six small lakes surrounded by marsh: Spring, Mayze, Pork Barrel, Bicking, Taylor and Bradley.
