About Springfield, Greene County
Springfield, seat of Greene County, is the metropolitan heart of the Missouri Ozarks and the place where U.S. Route 66 got its name in 1926. It birthed both Bass Pro Shops and the deep-fried Springfield-style cashew chicken, hosts the national headquarters of the Assemblies of God, and was the site of Wild Bill Hickok's famous 1865 quick-draw duel on the public square. Health care, outdoor retail, and Route 66 tourism define the modern city.
History of Springfield

- On April 30, 1926, a telegram sent from Springfield's Colonial Hotel to federal officials accepted the number '66' for the new Chicago-to-Los Angeles highway, earning the city its 'Birthplace of Route 66' title (route approved November 11, 1926).
