About Collingswood, New Jersey

Collingswood is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, on the east bank of the Delaware River across from Philadelphia. Incorporated in 1888, it was named for the Collings family, whose farmland formed most of the town. It is known for its walkable Haddon Avenue downtown, independent BYOB restaurants, the PATCO Speedline station, and the Scottish Rite Auditorium.

History of Collingswood

  • Incorporated as a borough on May 22, 1888 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, based on a referendum held that same day.
  • Named for the Collings family, whose farmland (held since the 1680s) made up most of the borough; the Collings-Knight House was built in 1824 by Edward Zane Collings.
  • In 1888, businessman Edward Collings Knight donated the land for the 70-acre Knight Park in the center of town.

The Collingswood Economy

  • The downtown business district along Haddon Avenue is anchored by independently owned BYOB restaurants and small shops, with spots like June BYOB appearing on NJ Monthly best-restaurant lists.
  • Collingswood functions largely as a Philadelphia commuter suburb, served by the PATCO Speedline station that reaches Center City in roughly 15 minutes.

Community Life in Collingswood

  • The Scottish Rite Auditorium, one of South Jersey's largest theaters, presents more than twenty concerts a year; performers have included America, Gordon Lightfoot, and Kansas.
  • The seasonal Collingswood Farmers' Market operates near the PATCO station.
  • The annual Collingswood May Fair draws crowds to the Haddon Avenue downtown.
