- Ashtabula Harbor, at the mouth of the Ashtabula River, a historic coal and ore port with a long coal ramp still standing, and the site of the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
- Ashtabula Maritime and Surface Transportation Museum, housed in the old lighthouse keeper's home, alongside the United States Coast Guard Station.
The Ashtabula Economy
- Ashtabula grew in the 20th century as a shipping and commercial center on Lake Erie, and through the 1950s an expanding chemical industry and rising harbor traffic made it one of the more important Great Lakes port cities. A long coal ramp is still visible in the harbor, ore is unloaded from Great Lakes freighters and moved to surviving steel mills in Pennsylvania, and Norfolk Southern's coal pier there was idled in 2016 as coal demand fell. Historical industry included a Rockwell International plant on Route 20 west of the city that made brakes for the Space Shuttle program, and the extrusion of depleted and enriched uranium at the Reactive Metals Extrusion plant on East 21st Street. Those uses left extensive contamination: the Environmental Protection Agency designated the river and harbor a significant Superfund site in the late 20th century, and the cleanup finished with river dredging in 2012 to 2014. Health care is a substantial presence through the Ashtabula County Medical Center, an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic system that runs the county's only behavioral medicine unit and a sleep disorders lab, added the county's first cardiac catheterization lab in December 2008, and closed its maternity suite to deliveries on August 1, 2020. Kent State University at Ashtabula operates a campus in the city.
