About Bay Village, Ohio

History of Bay Village

  • Erie Indians lived in the area before the first European-Americans arrived around 1600, and what is now Bay Village, together with Avon Lake, Avon and Westlake, formed one territory later called Xeuma, a term the cited 1892 Western Reserve Historical Society tract renders as roughly "those who came before us". Present-day Lake Road is the most important Indian trail in Ohio. The land belonged to Connecticut until Ohio statehood in 1803. Before then the Connecticut Land Company sold and granted land to Connecticut citizens who had lost homes and farms during the Revolutionary War, many of them to fires, which is why the tract was named the Firelands. The surveyor Moses Cleaveland reached the Cuyahoga River with his party and Indian guides in July 1796, the land was divided into five townships, and the area between the Cuyahoga and the Firelands was laid out in 1806. Joseph Cahoon settled in what is now Bay Village in 1810. The settlement formed part of the original Dover Township, which also covered present-day Westlake and parts of North Olmsted, and which had a permanent population of roughly 2,200 by the turn of the 20th century, swelled each summer by owners of Lake Erie cottages. In 1901 landowners in northern Dover forced an election to split away and formed Bay Township, and in 1903 Bay Village was incorporated. Ida Marie Cahoon, the last Cahoon descendant, died in 1917 and left the family home and 115 acres to the community, land now known as Cahoon Memorial Park. John Huntington, one of the original partners in the Standard Oil Company, donated his summer estate to the Cleveland Metroparks, and it became the Huntington Reservation. Bay Village became a city on January 1, 1950, having reached a population of 6,917. On August 6, 2024 two EF-1 tornadoes, part of a group of five across the greater Cleveland area, struck the city and left large parts of the area without power.
