About Bowling Green, Ohio
History of Bowling Green
- The place was first settled in 1832, incorporated as a town in 1855, and became a city in 1901.
- The name was taken from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Overman's Ohio Town Names and a 1967 university history are cited together for it. The far larger Kentucky city is therefore the parent of this name, not a rival for it.
Landmarks and Places in Bowling Green
- The Slippery Elm Trail is a 13-mile rail trail linking the city to North Baltimore, running from East Broadway Street at the southern end to Sand Ridge Road at the northern. A CSX line still runs through town, and Wood County Airport lies one nautical mile northeast of the central business district.
- The city stands on the bed of the Great Black Swamp, drained and settled in the nineteenth century.
The Bowling Green Economy
- Lubrizol runs a soap and surfactant production plant here.
- Ohio's first utility-sized wind farm stands along U.S. Route 6 just west of the city limits, about six miles out. Four turbines, each 257 feet tall, generate up to 7.2 megawatts. A solar-powered kiosk at the site reports live wind speed and output to visitors, and the turbines have become a local attraction in their own right.
Community Life in Bowling Green
- The Black Swamp Arts Festival is a free arts and live-music event held on the first full weekend after Labor Day.
- Bowling Green State University occupies the northeast side of the city along and north of Wooster Street, which carries Ohio State Route 64 and Ohio State Route 105. Enrollment was 20,232 as of September 2020, a figure roughly two thirds the size of the city's own census count.
- Bowling Green City School District runs Kenwood, Conneaut and Crim elementary schools, a middle school and a senior high school. Ridge Elementary closed in 2013 and Milton Elementary in 2011. Bowling Green Christian Academy, the Montessori School of Bowling Green and the parochial St. Aloysius operate alongside them.
