About Lorain, Ohio
Lorain lies about 25 miles west of Cleveland, on the Lake Erie shore where the Black River empties into the lake. The village was incorporated as Lorain in 1874, when Conrad Reid took office as first mayor, and it became a city in 1896. Toni Morrison, born and raised in Lorain, set her first novel, The Bluest Eye, in the city and later became the first Black woman of any nationality to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. King, who rose to fleet admiral and served as Chief of Naval Operations, was born in Lorain in 1878, and neuroscientist Robert Galambos, whose research showed how bats use echolocation, was born here too. Comedian Don Novello, Saturday Night Live's Father Guido Sarducci, grew up in Lorain.
