Medina was founded on November 30, 1818, in the Connecticut Western Reserve.
It was first named Mecca but changed its name because another Ohio community already used it.
The Ohio and Erie Canal, finished in the 1830s, helped local farmers ship their crops to market.
Medina was incorporated as a village and named county seat on January 31, 1835.
The city lies about 33 miles south of Cleveland and 23 miles west of Akron, and it takes in parts of Lafayette, Medina, Montville and York townships.
