Johann Heinrich Romer laid out the village in 1837 on land bought from his brother Franz.
The plat was drawn on July 13, the feast day of St. Henry, and St. Henry's Catholic Church, finished in 1897, stands at the center of the village.
A post office has served the village since 1850, and it was incorporated in 1901.
St. Henry High School plays in the Midwest Athletic Conference, and the village has a branch of the Mercer County District Library.
