History of Toledo
- The city was founded in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River and originally incorporated as part of the Michigan Territory.
- It was re-founded in Ohio in 1837 after the Toledo War, a boundary dispute between Ohio and Michigan; Lucas County is named for Ohio Governor Robert Lucas.
- Completion of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1845 and its position on the New York–Chicago rail line spurred rapid growth.
