About Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio, a dramatic three-river confluence ringed by steep hills and crossed by 446 bridges. Once the smoke-belching furnace that forged nearly a fifth of America's steel, the city reinvented itself into an 'eds and meds' and robotics hub anchored by UPMC and Carnegie Mellon. Fierce sports loyalty, a distinct 'Yinzer' dialect, and pierogi-and-Primanti food culture give the Steel City an identity as sturdy as the metal that named it.
History of Pittsburgh
- Grew from Fort Duquesne (French) and then Fort Pitt, built by the British in 1758 during the French and Indian War and named in honor of British statesman William Pitt.
- The name Pittsburgh combined 'Pitt' with 'burgh'; the settlement was incorporated as a borough in 1794 and chartered as a city in 1816.
- Nineteenth-century industrialization and demand for steel made Pittsburgh the region's industrial capital, home to Andrew Carnegie's Carnegie Steel.
Landmarks and Places in Pittsburgh
- Point State Park at the Golden Triangle, marking the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers.
- The Duquesne Incline and Monongahela Incline, historic funiculars climbing Mount Washington (the city once had as many as 15 inclines).
- The Andy Warhol Museum, the largest single-artist museum in North America.
The Pittsburgh Economy
- 'Eds and meds' anchor the economy: UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is the largest employer in Allegheny County, with more than 40 hospitals and about $30 billion in 2024 operating revenue.
- Carnegie Mellon University seeded a deep robotics and AI ecosystem; the Pittsburgh region hosts 260-plus robotics/AI/smart-systems companies employing over 11,000 people.
- Roughly 1,600 technology firms operate in the area, including Google, Apple, and Amazon, contributing billions to regional payrolls.
Community Life in Pittsburgh
- Signature foods: the Primanti Bros. sandwich stacked with french fries and coleslaw inside the bread, pierogies, chipped ham, and Heinz ketchup.
- The annual Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival drew more than 4,000 people to the South Side in 2025.
- Rabid sports fandom: the Steelers and their 'Steeler Nation' waving the Terrible Towel, plus the Penguins (NHL) and Pirates (MLB).
