About Bristol, Tennessee

Landmarks and Places in Bristol

• Bristol Motor Speedway is a 0.533 mile oval short track that opened in 1961 after local businessman Larry Carrier announced it on January 17 of that year. Its turns bank between 24 and 28 degrees, the straights run from four degrees at the bottom to eight at the top, and it is the only track left on the NASCAR schedule using two pit road lanes rather than one. Capacity is 146,000, down from a peak of 162,000, and a 30 by 63 foot screen called Colossus TV hangs over the middle of the track. The facility has also hosted NCAA FBS college football and sprint car racing, and the two lane, 0.250 mile drag strip beside it was announced in 1964. The other landmark is the lighted slogan sign over State Street, listed on the National Register in 1988 and counted by the Register as being in Tennessee even though it physically spans both states. The Bristol Gas and Electric Company put it atop a hardware store in 1910 reading PUSH! THAT'S BRISTOL, moved it to its present spot in 1915, and a 1921 contest replaced the wording with A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE, which it has carried ever since across 1,332 light bulbs.

The Bristol Economy

• Motorsport is the anchor industry, through Bristol Motor Speedway and the adjacent Bristol Dragway, which hosts the Ford Thunder Valley Nationals as a National Hot Rod Association national event. The coal producer Alpha Metallurgical Resources, formerly Contura Energy, is headquartered in Bristol. Higher education runs through King University and Graham Bible College. Local media is a genuine sector rather than an afterthought, with the Bristol Herald Courier newspaper, WCYB-TV carrying NBC, The CW and Fox on its subchannels, and a radio dial that includes WXBQ, WTFM, WFHG and the low power WBCM Radio Bristol.
