About Church Hill, Tennessee
History of Church Hill
- The settlement began in the late eighteenth century as a trading post and stagecoach stop, and it went by two mill names first, Spencer's Mill and Patterson Mill. The present name came later and came literally: a Methodist congregation built on the hill above the Holston River valley, and the community took its name from that church, which still stands on Grandview Street. Incorporation came much later than settlement, in 1958. The oldest thing associated with the place predates all of it, the former site of Carter's Store, a trading outpost of the 1770s established by the Tennessee pioneer John Carter.
Landmarks and Places in Church Hill
- The New Canton Plantation and its antebellum mansion, Canton Hall, owned by the Hord family. Smith Place, built in the early twentieth century, is the second, and the former site of Carter's Store is the third. The Methodist church that gave the city its name still stands on Grandview Street. For scenery the defining feature is Bays Mountain, a Ridge and Valley formation that fills the southern horizon, with the Holston River below the town and Mount Carmel adjoining to the northeast.
