About Austin, Texas

Texas's capital and self-declared 'Live Music Capital of the World,' Austin pairs the pink-granite dome of its state capitol with honky-tonks, food trucks, and a bat colony a million-plus strong under a downtown bridge. Once the sleepy village of Waterloo on the Colorado River, it is now a booming tech hub ('Silicon Hills') that still fights to 'Keep Austin Weird.'

History of Austin

• The first permanent Anglo settlers in the 1830s called their village Waterloo, on the banks of the Colorado River.
• In 1839 the young Republic of Texas chose the site as its permanent capital and renamed it Austin, after Stephen F. Austin, the 'Father of Texas.'
• The first city lots were sold at auction on August 1, 1839, and the city was incorporated on December 27, 1839.

Landmarks and Places in Austin

• The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, host to the world's largest urban bat colony.
• Barton Springs Pool, a spring-fed pool in Zilker Park holding a steady 68 degrees year-round.

Community Life in Austin

• South by Southwest (SXSW) fills the city each March with film, music, and interactive-tech programming.
• The Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival takes over Zilker Park across two weekends every October, tied to the long-running PBS concert series 'Austin City Limits.'
