More About Bellaire

William Wright Baldwin, president of the South End Land Company and a Burlington Railroad vice president, founded Bellaire in 1908.

It was laid out on part of William Marsh Rice's 9,449-acre ranch, where Baldwin surveyed 1,000 acres into small truck farms called Westmoreland Farms.

Baldwin said the name means good air, for the area's breezes.

Housing lots in the city measure 75 by 130 feet.

The city once sat on a streetcar line and now has a bus transit center.
