More About Itasca

Itasca takes its name from Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

It sits at the head of Richland Creek, on a natural divide between the Brazos and Trinity river basins at the edge of the Blackland Prairie.

Town lots went on sale on October 10, 1881, after G. M. Dodge bought 100 acres for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, and the town incorporated in 1885.

The weekly Itasca Mail began in 1884, became the Itasca Item in 1900 and kept publishing for more than 100 years.

The Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company opened in 1901 and made sheeting, drill and duck cloth, and the Itasca Weavers Guild formed around 1935.

Earl Farrow founded the Hill County Electric Cooperative here in 1937, the third co-op formed under the Rural Electrification Act.

Itasca ISD runs the town's elementary, middle and high schools.
