About Cherry Hill
History. Settled in 1825 and first called 'Ridge' for its location on the ridge shore of an ancient glacial lake. Renamed around 1865 after Abner Hitchcock built an inn called the Cherry Hill House, referencing wild cherry trees growing in the area. The Cherry Hill Historic District, roughly 17 acres of Gothic Revival and Italianate buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 2, 2003.
Local economy. The hamlet served as a commercial and social hub, centered on a general store, until roughly the 1960s. Cherry Hill Village, a New Urbanist residential development begun in 2000, added over 750 homes, parks, and a town center within Canton Township.
Culture and community. The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, a 400-seat performing arts center owned and operated by Canton Township, opened at the corner of Ridge and Cherry Hill roads in 2004. Cherry Hill Village was planned as a neotraditional, small-town-style community using traditional architecture and site plans. The 1882 Gothic Revival Cherry Hill United Methodist Church remains an active landmark in the historic district.
What makes Cherry Hill distinct. It is described as the last of Canton Township's five historic hamlets to retain substantial historic character. The community's name traces to wild cherry trees on the hill and to Abner Hitchcock's Cherry Hill House inn, replacing the earlier name 'Ridge.' Henry Ford's village industry plant at the old Wilson Dairy specifically employed disabled WWII veterans.
