About Cohoctah Center
History. Lyman Boughton and Gilbert Prentiss first settled the area that became Cohoctah Center in 1833. The locality was known as 'Sprungtown' after a prominent resident named Isaac Sprung; in 1874 the Sprungtown post office was moved to Cohoctah. In 1915 the community formerly called Cohoctah (the school section) was renamed Cohoctah Center, while the settlement at the railroad station, previously East Cohoctah, took the name Cohoctah.
Local economy. Agriculture is the dominant land use across Cohoctah Township, and Cohoctah Center itself has no shops or commercial businesses. The Cohoctah Township Hall, the community's main institution, sits in Cohoctah Center at 10518 N. Antcliff Road.
Culture and community. Cohoctah Center houses the Cohoctah Township Hall, the seat of township government for the roughly 3,200 residents of Cohoctah Township. The site was historically the township's designated school section, which is why the 1915 name change attached 'Center' to it. The parent township carried three names, Tuscola (1838) and Bristol (1857), before being named Cohoctah on February 5, 1867, a name said to come from a former Native American chief.
What makes Cohoctah Center distinct. Cohoctah Center is one of only three population centers in Cohoctah Township, alongside Cohoctah and Oak Grove, yet it has no stores, only the township hall. A 1915 name swap left the older Cohoctah renamed Cohoctah Center while the newer railroad-station hamlet of East Cohoctah simply became Cohoctah, so the two Cohoctahs sit a couple of miles apart. The original settlement was nicknamed 'Sprungtown' for local citizen Isaac Sprung before the post office consolidated under the Cohoctah name in 1874.
