About Gloucester City
History. Dutch traders built Fort Nassau in the 1620s along the Delaware River near present-day Gloucester City, one of the earliest European outposts on the river; the area later lay within the New Sweden colony (1638-1655). Recorded as Axwamus in 1677 and surveyed in 1689, the town was named for Gloucester, England, and was incorporated as Gloucester City on February 25, 1868, from portions of Union Township. Betsy Ross eloped from Philadelphia and married her first husband, John Ross, at Hugg's Tavern in Gloucester City on November 4, 1773.
Local economy. From the 1890s to the 1940s the Welsbach Company manufactured thorium gas mantles in Gloucester City using imported monazite ore; the radioactive waste produced the Welsbach and General Gas Mantle (Camden Radiation) Superfund site, added to the National Priorities List in 1996, from which the EPA has removed more than 200,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil. New Jersey included Gloucester City in an Urban Enterprise Zone in 2004, reflecting its shift away from a 19th-century textile-manufacturing and Delaware River port economy.
Culture and community. In the 2000 Census, 34.2 percent of Gloucester City residents claimed Irish ancestry, the ninth-highest share of any municipality in the United States; the Irishtown neighborhood is part of a state Neighborhood Preservation Program. Rock-and-roll pioneer Bill Haley and His Comets performed at the Twin Bar in Gloucester City in the early 1950s. Thomas Eakins painted Delaware River shad fishermen at Gloucester in 1881, including 'Mending the Net' and 'Shad Fishing at Gloucester on the Delaware River.'
What makes Gloucester City distinct. The New Jersey landing of the Walt Whitman Bridge, which opened May 16, 1957, is in Gloucester City. The Philadelphia Athletics played Sunday home games at the Gloucester Point Grounds from 1888 to 1890 to skirt Pennsylvania's ban on Sunday baseball. Gloucester City sits directly across the Delaware River from South Philadelphia and was historically connected to the city by a ferry at Gloucester Point.
