History. Elizur and Stanley Ruggles built the area's first sawmill on the Huron River in 1831, and Milford Township was organized in 1832. The Village of Milford was incorporated in 1869 and became the central commercial district for the surrounding township. General Motors selected roughly 1,125 acres west of the village in 1924 for the Milford Proving Ground, the auto industry's first dedicated vehicle-testing facility.

Local economy. The General Motors Milford Proving Ground, established in 1924, remains a major area employer and vehicle-testing operation; GM marked the site's 100th anniversary in 2024. Huron Valley Schools, headquartered in the Milford area, is one of the community's largest employers alongside the historic downtown commercial district.

Culture and community. Milford Memories is an annual summer arts and music festival held in downtown Milford each August. Kensington Metropark, along the Huron River and Kent Lake, sits just outside the village and is a regional recreation destination. Camp Dearborn, a large recreation area owned by the City of Dearborn, is located within Milford Township.

What makes Milford distinct. Thanks to hydropower from its riverside mills, Milford was among the first Michigan communities to have electric lights, in 1892.
