Tourism is still the largest employer, but technology keeps arriving. The Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center holds the Tesla Gigafactory along with Panasonic, Google and Switch, and the University of Nevada, Reno was named a federal Tech Hub in October 2023.
Beyond the Strip
Great Basin National Park fills a corner of the east, Lake Mead stretches behind Hoover Dam, and Red Rock Canyon sits just outside Las Vegas. Sixty-eight wilderness areas and 24 state park units cover the rest, and three historic trails cross the state: the California, the Pony Express and the Old Spanish. Virginia City still sits above the Comstock Lode.
Locals say the name with the vowel of apple, not the vowel of palm. A website that gets that detail right, or names the right ski hill above Lake Tahoe, reads as local to a Nevada visitor.
