Around 1850 Norwalk became part of the main rail route linking Chicago, Cleveland, and New York, and over the next two decades its population tripled from 1,437 to 4,498.

Norwalk Furniture, an upholstered-furniture maker that relocated to Norwalk in 1919 and became Norwalk Furniture Corporation in 1965, was bought by twelve local families in 2008 to keep the plant open.

The Firelands Historical Society, which began collecting artifacts in 1857, operates the Firelands Museum at 4 Case Avenue, described as the oldest operating museum in Ohio; its main building is the 1834 Samuel Preston house.
