Google's AI report counts how often your links appear in AI answers. Here is what those numbers leave out and what to do this week.

Google's Search Console now has a report that counts how often your links show up in AI Overviews and AI Mode. These numbers are useful, but they do not show clicks, and they are easy to misread. This week, open the report, save a baseline, and compare it with your regular click data before you change anything.
What changed since June
Search Console is a free Google tool. It shows how your site does in Google Search. On June 3, 2026, Google announced new generative AI performance reports. "Generative AI" means tools that write answers, like AI Overviews and AI Mode. At first, only a subset of sites got the reports.
According to Search Engine Journal, Google added a note saying that as of August 31, 2026, the reports reached all websites worldwide. The same article says Google's help pages still mention that the rollout is in progress. These two statements do not fully match, so some owners may not see the report yet. Also, the Search Console Help page says a site may not see it if it has not had enough impressions in these features.
The Search report shows impressions by page, country, device, and date. Experimental Search Labs features are not included. Discover has its own report, as Search Engine Journal explained.
What an AI impression does not mean
An impression is a count of how many times a link to your site was shown in one of these AI features. Here is what that count does not tell you.
- It does not mean someone clicked. The report does not include click data.
- It does not always mean someone saw your link. Google's guide to impressions says an impression is usually counted when an item is on the current page of results, even if it was never scrolled into view.
- It does not show your exact spot. Every link in an AI Overview gets the position of the Overview itself. Google's John Mueller said position is tracked "as a block" and is not separated out in this report, as Search Engine Journal reported.
- It does not tell you which search showed it. A review by windsor.ai notes the report does not list queries, does not split AI Overviews from AI Mode, and does not show who else was cited.
- It is not extra traffic on top of your other numbers. These impressions are already in your regular Web search data. Do not add the two together.
How to read the numbers correctly
Some links sit behind a "Show more" button. Those links do not count until someone expands the section. In that case, the report may undercount your exposure, not overcount it.
Totals can also look odd. In the chart, data is counted for your whole site. If two of your pages show up in one AI answer, the chart counts one impression. The page table may count one for each page. So page numbers added up may not match the chart. That is normal.
A few more details from Google's help page:
- The usual 1,000 row limit applies.
- Values shown as ~ or - become zeros when you export.
Google's guide also says to aim for meaningful impressions. That means being seen by people who find your page useful. More impressions alone is not the goal.
Steps to take this week
- Open the report. In Search Console, look under Performance, Search results. If it is missing, your site may not have enough AI impressions yet.
- Export a baseline. windsor.ai suggests exporting the Pages table for the last three months.
- Compare with clicks. Put that next to total impressions and clicks per page from the regular Performance report, for the same dates.
- Find the share. Work out what share of each page's impressions came from AI features. In windsor.ai's data, a definition guide got 83% of its impressions from AI features and 49 clicks in three months. A connector page got 53% and 7,238 clicks. A high share with few clicks may mean people got their answer on the results page.
- Think before you opt out. Google has a setting that removes your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI features in Discover. Sites that opt out get no traffic or impressions from these features. Google says the setting is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search. It also does not affect AI training, which uses a separate control called Google-Extended. The default is to be included.
- Check again each month. windsor.ai re-runs its checks monthly to see what changes.
One more date to watch. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has given Google until March 2027 to add page-level controls, according to Search Engine Journal. Today the setting covers your whole site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI impression mean someone clicked my link?
No. The generative AI report shows impressions only. It does not include click data.
Did the person actually see my link?
Not always. Google usually counts an impression when your link is on the current page of results, even if it was never scrolled into view. Links behind a "Show more" button do not count until someone expands them.
Why is my average position so high in AI Overviews?
Every link in an AI Overview gets the position of the Overview block itself. It does not show where your link sat among the other links.
Should I add AI impressions to my regular impressions?
No. The AI report is a filtered view of data already in your Web search type. Adding them would count the same impressions twice.
What happens if I opt out of AI features?
Your site gets no traffic or impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode, or AI features in Discover. Google says the setting is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search.
