If someone has tried to sell you a GEO package by promising a "40 percent boost in AI visibility," you deserve to know what that number actually comes from, and what a brand-new academic review says about it.

On July 15, 2026, researcher Olivier Martinez posted a critical survey to arXiv that reviewed 45 studies on Generative Engine Optimization published between November 2023 and July 2026. The conclusion was direct: no evaluated technique consistently improves organic discoverability, downstream traffic, or business outcomes across AI platforms.

That is a significant finding in a market where GEO services are growing fast and many small businesses are being asked to spend real money on them.

Where the "40 Percent" Number Actually Comes From

The widely cited 40 percent visibility figure comes from a foundational 2024 paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi. That research tested content modifications across AI search engines using 10,000 queries and found that adding statistics, quotations, and citations improved how prominently a source was referenced in answers.

The problem is what that experiment actually measured. As the new July 2026 survey explains, the gains were measured after a source was already present in the AI model's fixed context window. The experiment did not test whether those rewritten pages were more likely to get pulled into an AI answer in the first place.

That is a meaningful difference. Getting more space once you are already in the answer is not the same as getting found in the first place. The July 2026 review grades treating the 40 percent figure as a general promise about ranking in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews as a claim the evidence does not support.

Why AI Search Visibility Is Harder to Measure Than SEO

Traditional SEO has a relatively stable scoreboard. You rank at position three, or you do not. AI search does not work that way.

A separate 2026 research paper measuring source stability across AI engines found that roughly 65 percent of cited sources change from one day to the next. The sources AI platforms pick are not locked in the way a Google ranking is. They shift with model updates, query phrasing, and factors outside your control.

This instability makes it hard to know whether any specific change you made to your website actually caused a change in AI citations. The GEO measurement problem is real, and the industry has not solved it yet.

What the Research Does Support

None of this means you should ignore AI visibility. It means you should focus on what the evidence actually backs up rather than on formatting tricks that have not been proven to work at scale.

Here is what the research consistently points toward:

  • Content quality and authority. The July 2026 survey supports optimizing for content quality and genuine authority. AI platforms favor pages that clearly answer questions, define concepts, and explain processes in a structured way.
  • Logical heading structure. Research published in early 2026 found that a strong majority of ChatGPT citations come from pages with well-organized heading hierarchies. An H1 followed by clear H2 and H3 sections is not just good web design. It also makes your content easier for AI systems to parse.
  • Comprehensive, specific content. Thin pages get cited far less often than detailed ones. Pages that go deep on a single topic, define terms, and back up claims with real facts consistently outperform generic summaries.
  • Structured data markup. Research shows that a majority of cited pages use schema markup. If your site does not have structured data, you are making it harder for AI platforms to understand and trust what you do.
  • Third-party trust signals. Review profiles, business directory listings, and consistent name-address-phone data across the web all correlate with higher AI citation rates. AI platforms look beyond your own website.
  • Content freshness. Stale pages lose citation eligibility. Updating your most important pages with current information on a regular schedule keeps them competitive across both traditional search and AI answer engines.

What This Means for Your Budget

Search is now running on two parallel tracks. The traditional results page with ranked links still exists, but AI-generated answers now appear alongside or above those results for a large share of queries. Being cited inside an AI answer drives higher trust perception and can send higher-intent visitors to your site. That visibility is worth pursuing.

What is not worth pursuing is paying a premium for proprietary GEO formatting formulas that no peer-reviewed research has proven work consistently. The July 2026 survey makes clear the industry lacks standardized measurement and that bold cross-platform claims are not backed by evidence.

Your money is better spent on the fundamentals: well-written content that answers real questions, clean technical structure, active review management, and consistent off-site profiles. Those investments help you in traditional search, in AI citations, and in the direct trust a potential customer feels when they land on your site.

A Practical Starting Point for Small Business Owners

You do not need an enterprise GEO contract to get started. Here are four concrete steps you can take this month:

  • Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google with a question your ideal customer would ask. See if your business shows up. That is your baseline.
  • Pick your three most important service or product pages and ask whether each one clearly defines what you do, who it is for, and why someone should trust you. If the answer is no, rewrite them before worrying about any optimization layer on top.
  • Check that your Google Business Profile, Bing Places listing, and primary industry directories all show the same business name, address, and phone number. Inconsistencies weaken AI trust signals.
  • Add or audit schema markup on your site so AI crawlers can identify your business type, location, services, and reviews without guessing.

The fundamentals are not glamorous, but they are what independent research actually supports. When a vendor promises a specific percentage lift in AI visibility, ask them which platform measured it, over what time period, and whether the source was already in the model context before the test ran. If they cannot answer those questions, you have your answer.
