Bottom line first: a peer-reviewed survey published in July 2026 examined 45 generative engine optimization studies and found that no evaluated technique consistently improves organic AI visibility, downstream traffic, or business results across platforms. If someone is selling you a GEO package with guaranteed results, that research should give you pause.

That does not mean you should ignore AI visibility. It means you need to understand what the evidence actually shows before spending money on it.

What the Research Actually Found

The critical survey reviewed 45 studies published between November 2023 and July 2026. It argues that GEO is not a single ranking task but a complex, partially observable pipeline - and that terminology, metrics, and evidence standards across the field remain inconsistent.

You may have seen the widely repeated claim that GEO can boost AI visibility by around 40 percent. The survey addresses that directly. The foundational paper's widely cited gains are valid within its experimental setting but conditional on a source already being present in a fixed context - they establish neither organic discoverability nor durable traffic effects.

In plain English: the 40 percent figure measures how prominent your content looks after an AI has already pulled it in, not whether the AI will find and pull your content in the first place. Those are two very different things.

Why AI Citations Are So Hard to Predict

Part of the problem is that AI platforms do not behave like a standard search index. Page overlap across two months is 18 percent for AI Overviews, compared with 45 percent for organic Google. On surfaces where temperature could be controlled, repeated runs at temperature zero change 9 to 28 percent of decisions.

That variability matters. Even when researchers run the same query twice on the same day, AI platforms often return different cited sources. These results challenge the notion of a global GEO ranking. Visibility is indexed by engine and surface. A site visible in conventional search results may be absent from AI Overviews; a domain cited by Perplexity may never appear in ChatGPT.

That instability makes it very hard to measure whether any specific optimization tactic actually caused an improvement - or whether the result simply changed on its own.

What This Means If You Run a Small Business

Here is the practical takeaway: you do not need to abandon AI visibility as a goal. Your business now needs visibility across search engines, AI Overviews, chat interfaces, and discovery layers that do not always send traffic back. That is real. What is not real is a guaranteed formula to get there.

The good news is that the practices most likely to help with AI visibility are the same ones that help with traditional search. Technical structure still matters. Clean sitemaps, internal links, strong headings, explicit entities, and short answer blocks help your pages appear in both classic search and AI-generated answers.

Trust now starts before the click. Brand mentions, reviews, expert profiles, case evidence, and strong branded pages matter more because many users may see your name in an AI answer before they ever visit your site.

The Content Habits That Still Hold Up

Even without a proven GEO playbook, some content approaches consistently appear across the research as worth doing:

  • Write clear, direct answers. The pages most likely to get cited are clear, structured, current, and consistent across your site and off-site profiles.
  • Publish original, specific content. Generic content is losing value. AI tools can compress many similar articles into one answer, so you win by publishing clear definitions, buyer-focused pages, proof, and a distinct point of view.
  • Build your brand off-site too. Getting mentioned in industry publications, local directories, review platforms, and third-party articles builds the kind of authority that AI systems appear to weigh heavily.
  • Keep your technical foundation solid. Make sure AI crawlers can actually access your pages. Check your robots.txt file. Many sites block AI crawlers without realizing it, and Cloudflare recently changed its default configuration to block AI bots.
  • Stay consistent. Your business name, address, phone number, and description should match everywhere they appear online. AI systems cross-reference multiple sources to decide whether to trust what you say about yourself.

Watch Out for Oversold GEO Services

Publishers are increasingly using their prominence in AI-generated answers as a commercial selling point for advertisers. Organizations including major media outlets are developing GEO offerings designed to improve brands' presence in AI responses. However, the industry lacks standardized methods for measuring AI visibility, with competing analytics providers using different methodologies and producing inconsistent results.

That is worth keeping in mind when you evaluate proposals. If a vendor cannot explain exactly what metric they are measuring, how they are attributing any change to their work, and how stable that measurement is over time, be skeptical.

What to Focus On Right Now

The research does not say GEO is useless. It says the field is still young, measurement is hard, and no one has cracked a reliable formula yet. In 2026, GEO continues to mature as a software category, and this new discipline focuses on making brand content more visible and optimized for AI recommendations. As the landscape evolves, businesses will need to adapt their strategies to maintain and improve their presence in AI-driven search results.

The safest investment right now is the same work that has always paid off: a fast, well-structured website, authoritative content that genuinely helps your audience, consistent business information across every platform, and a steady flow of real customer reviews. Those basics serve you in traditional search today and put you in the best possible position as AI search tools mature.
