What the New Research Actually Says
A peer-reviewed survey published in July 2026 reviewed 45 studies on generative engine optimization, covering research from November 2023 through July 2026. The conclusion was blunt: no evaluated technique consistently improves organic discoverability, downstream traffic, or business outcomes across AI platforms.
That matters because vendors are actively selling GEO services right now. Publishers are increasingly using their prominence in AI-generated answers as a commercial selling point for advertisers, with organizations including Axios, Forbes, Time, and The Washington Post developing GEO offerings designed to improve brands' presence in AI responses. If large publishers are packaging this as a product, small business owners will soon see similar pitches from local marketing agencies.
Before you spend a dollar, you need to understand what the research actually found.
The Famous "40 Percent Lift" Claim Is Misleading
You may have seen or heard that GEO can increase AI visibility by around 40 percent. That figure comes from the foundational GEO paper from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi. It is real research -- but the survey puts it in important context.
The foundational paper's widely cited gains are valid within its experimental setting but conditional on a source already being present in a fixed context; they establish neither organic discoverability nor durable traffic effects.
In plain terms: the study measured how much of an answer came from your content after AI already pulled your page into the mix -- not whether AI would find you in the first place. Those are two very different things.
The survey argues that GEO is not a single ranking task but a stochastic, partially observable pipeline spanning search activation, crawling and indexing, retrieval, reranking and context allocation, citation, prominence, factual absorption, fidelity, and user behavior. Each step introduces variability that a single optimization tactic cannot reliably control.
AI Answers Are Inconsistent by Nature
Part of why GEO is hard to pin down is that AI search results are not stable the way Google's blue links used to be.
Page overlap across two months is 18 percent for AI Overviews, compared with 45 percent for organic Google; on the surfaces for which temperature could be controlled, repeated runs at temperature zero change 9 to 28 percent of decisions.
What that means for you: a page cited in an AI answer today may not be cited tomorrow, even if nothing on the page changed. The industry also lacks standardized methods for measuring AI visibility, with competing analytics providers using different methodologies and producing inconsistent results. So if a vendor shows you an "AI visibility score," ask exactly how they calculate it and whether that method matches what Google or Perplexity actually does.
Google Gave You a New Tool to Watch This Yourself
The good news: you no longer have to guess at your AI visibility. On June 3, Google launched dedicated Generative AI Performance Reports inside Search Console, the first native measurement of AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions.
Reports cover impressions, pages, countries, and devices, from hourly through monthly granularity, plus a content opt-out toggle that removes content from AI features without touching organic rankings.
Log into Google Search Console, look for the Generative AI report, and start tracking which pages earn AI Overview impressions. That is free, first-party data -- more reliable than any third-party AI visibility tool.
What Actually Works Right Now
The survey does not say GEO efforts are worthless. It says the field needs more honest measurement. Several tactics have credible support across multiple studies. Focus your energy here:
- Cite authoritative sources inside your content. AI engines tend to favor content that already cites credible sources. Add a sourced statistic or an expert quote to your key pages.
- Keep important pages fresh. For fast-moving queries, content older than 90 days enters a decay window where it starts losing retrieval priority to newer pages, according to analysis of Perplexity's citation mechanics. Review your highest-traffic pages on a regular schedule.
- Earn mentions off your own site. Brand mentions, reviews, expert profiles, case evidence, and strong branded pages matter more because many users may see your name in an AI answer before they ever visit your site. Getting quoted on local news sites, industry directories, or community forums builds the kind of off-site authority AI systems trust.
- Use clear headings and structured answers. Clean sitemaps, internal links, strong headings, explicit entities, and short answer blocks help your pages appear in both classic search and AI-generated answers.
- Build branded search volume. The simplest proxy for entity strength is the volume and consistency of branded searches -- people typing your brand name into Google, ChatGPT, or Perplexity. Branded-query volume is also one of the clearest signals that your GEO program is working.
The Bigger Picture for Your Business
AI search is real and growing. Ranking well on Google no longer means a brand is visible where a growing share of buyers are actually getting answers. You do need to think about AI visibility. But you should approach it the same way you approach any marketing investment: demand clear measurement and be skeptical of guarantees.
Google's own guidance on this is direct: there is no separate AI search strategy. GEO and AEO are foundational SEO applied to AI surfaces. That is good news for small businesses. It means the best thing you can do is keep doing smart SEO -- good content, a fast and crawlable site, consistent business information across the web -- while layering in the citation and freshness habits described above.
You do not need an expensive new service to get started. You need a well-built, regularly updated website and a content plan grounded in what your customers actually ask.
