The Core Problem: Not All AI Engines Agree on Who to Cite
If your business depends on being found online, you now have to think beyond Google rankings. A benchmark published in July 2026 by AI-visibility platform CiteLens found that Google AI Mode and Perplexity drew roughly 90% of their citations from Google's top-10 search results, while ChatGPT pulled only about 30% from the same pool. That gap is not a rounding error. It means a brand that ranks well on Google can still be nearly invisible when a potential customer asks ChatGPT the same question.
This is the defining challenge of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) in mid-2026. Classic SEO gets you into one visibility layer. GEO is about earning a place in all of them.
Why This Matters More Than Ever in July 2026
The AI answer layer is no longer a niche concern. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 47 to 64% of all search queries across desktop and mobile, up from around 25 to 30% when the feature first rolled out in 2024. For informational queries in sectors like healthcare, finance, and technology, that figure climbs to 70% or higher.
At the same time, zero-click searches on Google grew from 56% to 69% in the twelve months following the AI Overviews launch in May 2024. Buyers increasingly get their answer without ever visiting your website. If your business is not the answer, someone else is.
On top of that, a June 2026 spam update rolled out and tightened Google's standards around content quality and trust signals. Thin, template-driven pages took hits. The message from Google is consistent: structured, authoritative, people-first content wins in both traditional search and AI citations.
What the Research Says About Getting Cited
Academic research from Princeton, presented at the KDD 2024 conference and widely cited in 2026 GEO discussions, tested specific content changes and measured their impact on AI citation rates. The findings are concrete and actionable:
- Adding statistics to content improved AI visibility by up to 41%.
- Adding quotations improved visibility by around 28%.
- Citing external sources improved visibility by as much as 115% for lower-ranked content.
Those numbers apply across platforms, but the degree to which each platform responds varies. Perplexity cites sources in about 97% of its responses. ChatGPT cites in roughly 16%. That means getting into Perplexity's answers requires appearing trustworthy enough to be surfaced proactively, while ChatGPT inclusion depends more on the authority of your domain and how widely your content is referenced across the web.
The Platform-by-Platform Picture for Small Businesses
You do not need to treat each platform as a completely separate project, but you do need to understand what each one rewards.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: These pull heavily from pages that already perform well in classic Google Search. Strong on-page structure, schema markup, clear headings, and FAQ sections all help. Being cited requires being indexable, crawlable, and written in a way that Google can extract clean quote blocks from your page.
- Perplexity: Perplexity cites almost every response and rewards pages that are factual, structured, and recently updated. It also favors content that appears on trusted third-party sources, not just your own site. Getting mentioned on review sites, industry directories, and news sources increases your odds.
- ChatGPT: With a lower citation rate overall, ChatGPT leans on its training data and live web search when browsing is enabled. Brand mentions across authoritative sites, consistent name-address-phone data, and a clear entity footprint across the web all build the signal that pushes your business into its answers.
What Small Business Owners Can Do Right Now
You do not need an enterprise budget to improve your GEO standing. Most of what works is disciplined content practice.
- Write one strong page per key topic. Make it the clearest, most factual page on that subject your business can produce. Put a direct answer near the top, use short paragraphs and clear headings, and include real data with dates.
- Add FAQ sections. AI systems extract question-and-answer pairs easily. A well-written FAQ at the bottom of a service page or blog post gives every platform a ready-made citation block.
- Refresh important content every 8 to 12 weeks. AI platforms favor recent content. Update statistics, add new examples, and revise your published date whenever you make meaningful changes.
- Check whether AI bots can crawl your site. Tools like Cloudflare have changed default settings that may silently block AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. If those bots cannot read your pages, you will not be cited regardless of how good your content is.
- Build your entity footprint off-site. Get your business mentioned in local directories, trade publications, customer review platforms, and industry news sources. Earned media and consistent brand mentions across authoritative sites feed AI citation engines the trust signals they need.
- Use structured data markup. Article, FAQ, HowTo, and LocalBusiness schema all help AI systems parse your content accurately. If your site does not use schema, adding it is one of the highest-return technical improvements available right now.
GEO Does Not Replace SEO -- It Extends It
The good news for small business owners is that solid SEO work is still the foundation. Strong SEO performance directly feeds GEO results because most AI platforms start their citation selection from high-ranking search results. The difference in 2026 is that ranking alone is no longer enough. Citation overlap between Google's organic top-10 and AI Overviews has weakened from about 76% in mid-2025 to somewhere between 17% and 54% depending on the study and query type. That means pages outside the top 10 can still earn citations if they are well-structured and authoritative on a specific topic.
For a Michigan small business, this is an opening, not a threat. Local expertise, real customer proof, and specific service-area content are exactly the signals that help a focused business earn AI citations that a generic national competitor cannot easily match.
Start Measuring What AI Engines Actually Do
Traditional metrics like rank position and organic traffic are no longer the full story. If your content appears in a Google AI Overview but the user never clicks through, your Google Search Console data will not capture that impression the same way. The measurement gap is real, and businesses that build AI visibility tracking now will have a compounding advantage over those that start later.
At minimum, run your most important service queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google to see whether your business appears in the answers. If it does not, that is your starting point.
