Bottom line up front: a new July 2026 benchmark confirmed that ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode each follow a different rulebook when deciding which businesses to cite. If your strategy treats all three the same way, you are likely invisible on at least one of them.
Why the Citation Gap Matters to Your Business Right Now
Buyers are asking AI instead of scrolling search results more often than ever. The old goal was a top-three Google ranking. The new goal is getting cited inside the answer an AI generates before anyone clicks anywhere.
The problem is that the three biggest AI answer platforms do not agree on who deserves a citation. A July 2026 benchmark by AI-visibility platform CiteLens found that Google AI Mode and Perplexity drew roughly 90% of their citations from Google's top-10 search results, while ChatGPT pulled only 30% of its citations from that same pool. That gap is precisely why small businesses need platform-specific thinking, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
The category of tools built to measure this is also maturing fast. As of early July 2026, a wave of generative engine optimization (GEO) platforms has emerged to track exactly where brands appear in AI-generated answers, and which ones do not appear at all.
How Each Platform Decides Who to Cite
Understanding the basic logic behind each platform helps you focus your effort where it counts.
- Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. These systems lean heavily on Google's own index. If your pages rank well in classic organic search and are easy to crawl and snippet, you have a strong shot at being cited. Google's own guidance says pages need to be indexed and eligible for snippets -- no special schema or llms.txt files required. Classic SEO fundamentals feed directly into AI citation here.
- Perplexity. Perplexity cites sources in 97% of its responses, which is both an opportunity and a higher bar. It rewards pages that are clearly structured, factually grounded, and internally consistent. If your content is easy to quote in a short block, Perplexity is more likely to pull it. The high citation rate also means your brand name appears visibly when Perplexity is used.
- ChatGPT. ChatGPT cites sources in only about 16% of responses. When it does cite, it draws from a much wider pool than just Google's top-10. That means classic SEO rank matters far less here. Instead, ChatGPT rewards content that appears across many authoritative sources: third-party articles, forum mentions, press coverage, and well-linked pages that show up repeatedly when the AI breaks a question into sub-queries.
The Sub-Query Mechanic Most Business Owners Miss
AI platforms do not search the web the way a human would. When someone asks a broad question, the system breaks it into several smaller sub-queries and searches each one separately. Pages that appear across multiple of those sub-query results get cited in the final answer, regardless of their rank for the original question.
This means a niche expert with a well-organized, specific page can outperform a large competitor whose generic content only ranks for the broad term. For small businesses, that is a real opening.
The practical move: identify the specific sub-topics your customers ask about, and build a clearly answered, self-contained page for each one. Short answer blocks near the top, direct definitions, and FAQ sections all help AI extract and cite your content.
What the Data Says About Content That Gets Cited
Peer-reviewed research from Princeton presented at KDD 2024 tested which content techniques improve AI visibility across ten search engines. Adding statistics improved visibility by 41%, adding quotations improved it by 28%, and citing external sources improved it by 115% for lower-ranked content. Those numbers hold up in 2026 practice guides as well.
AI platforms also have a strong recency bias. Content that has not been updated in months is less likely to be pulled as a source. Most current GEO guidance recommends refreshing priority pages every 8 to 12 weeks with new data, updated examples, and a revised publication date.
Five Actions Small Businesses Can Take This Month
- Check your crawlability first. If AI bots cannot read your site, nothing else matters. Review your robots.txt file and your CDN settings. Some CDN configurations block AI crawlers by default without any alert to site owners.
- Write one strong answer page per core topic. Put the direct answer at the top, use clear headings, add an FAQ section, and include at least one original data point or real example. That structure works for classic search and for AI citation at the same time.
- Build your presence off your own site. Earned mentions in third-party publications, updated business directory profiles, and consistent name-address-phone data across the web all strengthen the signal that AI systems use to decide whether to trust and cite you.
- Keep your Google Business Profile current. Google's own guidance specifically recommends Google Business Profiles for local business visibility inside AI responses. An outdated or incomplete profile hurts your chances in both Google AI Mode and standard search.
- Track citations, not just rankings. Your Google Search Console rank tells you where you place in blue-link results. It does not tell you whether you are cited inside AI answers on ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode. Those are different metrics that require different tracking tools.
The Bigger Picture for Michigan Small Businesses
Google AI Overviews now appear on a large share of all informational and how-to search queries. When an AI Overview is present, organic click-through rates drop significantly compared to queries without one. That traffic loss is real, and it is not going away.
The businesses seeing the best results are not fighting that shift. They are treating AI answer layers as a new visibility channel that rewards the same qualities -- genuine expertise, clear writing, and a trustworthy online presence -- that good SEO has always rewarded. The difference is that you now need to earn a citation, not just a ranking, and the citation rules vary by platform.
At AppWT, we have worked with Michigan small businesses on web and digital strategy since 1997.
