45 GEO Studies Found No Consistent Results: What Small Business Owners Should Do Instead

The Short Answer

A review of 45 generative engine optimization studies, published in late July 2026, found that no tested GEO technique consistently improved AI discoverability, traffic, or business results across platforms. That does not mean you should ignore AI search. It means you should stop chasing unproven tactics and focus on what the evidence actually supports.

At the same time, Google made two concrete changes in July 2026 that every small business owner should know about. Both give you real tools to act on right now.

What the 45-Study Review Actually Found

Researchers looked at 45 studies on generative engine optimization and came to a blunt conclusion: no evaluated technique consistently improves organic discoverability, downstream traffic, or business outcomes across AI platforms.

The review also challenged one of the most-repeated claims in the GEO space. The widely cited figure suggesting GEO can increase visibility by roughly 40 percent came from a single laboratory metric. That metric measured how prominent content appeared after it had already been retrieved by an AI system -- not how likely it was to be retrieved in the first place. Those are two very different things.

The researchers also noted substantial variability in how AI search systems behave and called for more rigorous, standardized evaluation methods before broad GEO performance claims are accepted.

For a small business owner, the practical takeaway is straightforward: be skeptical of any vendor promising guaranteed AI citation improvements through proprietary GEO techniques. The science does not yet back those promises up.

What the Evidence Does Support

The same review did point to strategies with consistent support across the literature. These are not glamorous, but they work:

  • Content quality and authority. AI systems favor content that is accurate, well-sourced, and written by a credible, identifiable author. A named author with a clear biography and real credentials matters.
  • Clear structure. Pages that open with a direct answer, use descriptive headings, and break information into focused sections are easier for AI systems to read and cite. FAQs, definitions, and comparison sections all help.
  • Freshness and accuracy. Outdated or factually thin content gets passed over. Keeping core pages current is one of the simplest things you can do.
  • Consistency across your web presence. Your business name, address, phone number, and core claims should match across your website, social profiles, and third-party listings. Inconsistency creates trust problems for both search engines and AI systems.
  • Genuine off-site authority. Being mentioned and cited by credible external sources still matters. Earning those mentions through real expertise is the path that holds up over time.

Two Real Google Changes From July 2026

While the GEO research debate continues, Google shipped concrete updates this month that directly affect small business visibility.

Google AI Overviews Added a Live News Carousel and More Citation Links

Google confirmed that a Top Stories carousel is now live inside AI Overviews for mobile users in the United States. Google also announced it is showing more links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, specifically to surface original content and firsthand perspectives. That is a meaningful shift. It means being cited inside AI Overviews is not purely a game for big publishers. Niche experts and local businesses with clear, original content now have a real opening.

The broader picture from July 2026 is that SEO today is as much about managing your presence across AI surfaces as it is about earning traditional blue links. The two strategies are converging, not competing.

Google Search Console Platform Properties Are Now Live for Everyone

On July 7, 2026, Google introduced a new Search Console feature called platform properties. It went globally available to all users on July 29, 2026. Here is what it does:

  • You can now connect your Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube accounts directly to Google Search Console.
  • Once connected, you see clicks, impressions, average position, and the exact search queries that sent people to your social content from Google Search and Discover.
  • You also get three report types: Performance, Insights, and Achievements.
  • You do not need a website to use it -- creators and businesses without their own domain can access the data too.

Why does this matter for AI visibility? Social content that generates Google Search impressions is indexed content that AI systems can retrieve and potentially cite. A well-optimized YouTube video answering a common customer question is a potential citation source for Gemini and other AI systems, not just a social media post. The platform properties data tells you which of your social content Google is already surfacing -- and that is your starting point for deciding where to invest more effort.

A Practical Checklist for Michigan Small Businesses

Here is where to put your time based on what the current evidence actually supports:

  • Connect your social accounts to Google Search Console and review the platform properties data. It is free.
  • Audit your top five website pages. Does each one open with a direct, clear answer to the question it targets? If not, rewrite the opening.
  • Add or update author bios on every page that covers your professional expertise. Name, credentials, and experience all matter.
  • Check that your business name, address, and phone number are identical on your website, Google Business Profile, and all social platforms.
  • Identify two or three questions your customers ask most often. Build a focused FAQ section or a short dedicated page for each one.
  • Look at your YouTube or video content. Are titles and descriptions written in plain language that matches how customers search? If not, update them.
  • Set a reminder to review and refresh your top-performing pages every six months. Freshness is a real signal.

The Bottom Line

The GEO research is still maturing, and that is actually good news for small businesses. It means you do not need to buy into expensive, unproven AI optimization packages to stay competitive. The businesses that will show up in AI-generated answers are the ones with clear, accurate, well-structured content and a consistent, credible presence across the web -- the same fundamentals that have always driven good search performance.

Focus on substance over shortcuts, take advantage of the free tools Google just handed you in Search Console, and keep your content current. That is a strategy the evidence supports.
