Here is the bottom line: ranking on page one of Google no longer reliably gets your business cited in Google AI Overviews. Fresh data confirms the gap is wide and growing. If you have been counting on your search rankings to also earn AI visibility, that plan needs an update right now.
What the New Data Actually Shows
An Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 results for the same query. In the previous version of that study, conducted in July 2025, that number was 76%. That is a sharp drop in less than a year.
The remaining citations are split almost evenly between results appearing in positions 11 through 100 (31.2%) and pages beyond position 100 (31.0%). In plain terms, pages buried deep in search results are now earning AI citations at roughly the same rate as pages on pages two and three of Google.
More than 51% of Google searches now end without a click, and ChatGPT drives 92.4% of trackable standalone-LLM referral traffic, according to the Previsible 2026 State of AI Discovery Report published July 6, 2026, which analyzed 6.77 million sessions across 166 website properties over 19 months.
Why This Happened: Query Fan-Out
Google has confirmed that its system performs a "query fan-out" whenever a user searches and an AI Overview is triggered. This is when the initial query is split into multiple related sub-queries. The pages that appear most often within those sub-query results then get cited in the AI Overview.
The fan-out mechanism rewards topical authority across a cluster of related pages, not a single high-ranking page. A brand with several focused articles on a topic can appear in sub-query results for many query variations, accumulating citation appearances across the fan-out, while a brand with one strong standalone page but narrow content coverage may rank well for the main term and still miss those citations.
As of January 2026, AI Overviews are now powered by Gemini 3, which is built to better answer searchers' long-tail questions. That upgrade appears to have made fan-out behavior more aggressive, which explains much of the citation shift.
What This Means for Local and Small Business Owners
AI Overview appearance on commercial-intent queries grew 71% over six months. Commercial intent includes searches like "plumber near me," "emergency HVAC," and "roof replacement cost" -- the queries that drive real business. That growth means AI Overviews are now showing up on the searches your customers actually use to hire someone.
Brands can rank number one on Google and still be absent from the answers buyers actually read. For a small business owner, that is a serious problem. Your website may look strong in Google Search Console while your name never appears in the AI-generated summary your potential customer sees first.
On June 3, Google launched dedicated Generative AI Performance Reports inside Search Console, the first native measurement of AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. The reports cover impressions by page, country, and device, and include a content opt-out toggle that removes content from AI features without affecting organic rankings. If you have not checked that report for your site yet, that is the first thing to do this week.
The YouTube Factor Small Businesses Often Overlook
YouTube is the most cited domain in AI Overviews today and has grown 34% over the last six months, according to Ahrefs Brand Radar data.
Ahrefs research of 75,000 brands revealed that mentions on YouTube, in video titles, transcripts, and descriptions, are the strongest correlating factor with AI Overview visibility. You do not need a polished video studio. A short, clearly spoken explainer video on your Google Business Profile or YouTube channel -- with an accurate transcript -- builds the kind of off-site presence AI systems look for.
Six Things to Do on Your Website Right Now
You do not need to rebuild your whole site. Focus on these six changes and you will improve your chances of earning AI citations alongside your search rankings.
- Build topic clusters, not isolated pages. A brand with several focused articles on a topic earns citations across multiple fan-out sub-queries, while a brand with one strong page and narrow coverage may rank well and still miss the fan-out citations. Write three to five supporting articles around every core service page.
- Write in short, self-contained answer blocks. AI Overviews prioritize passages that fully answer queries in 134 to 167 word self-contained units. Start each section with a direct answer, then expand. Short paragraphs win here.
- Add structured data markup. Structured data using Schema.org markup enables AI systems to interpret websites in a machine-readable format. Instead of relying only on visible text, LLMs use these signals to understand meaning, relationships, and intent. At minimum, add Organization, FAQ, and Article schema to your key pages.
- Check what AI crawlers can actually see. Check your robots.txt file. Many sites block AI crawlers without realizing it. Cloudflare recently changed its default configuration to block AI bots. If you use Cloudflare, your AI bot traffic may have been shut off automatically.
- Keep content fresh and dated. AI systems have a strong recency bias. Update important content at least once every three months to stay competitive in citation pools.
- Build presence on third-party platforms. The brands winning AI Overview citations in mid-2026 are not necessarily the brands with the best Google rankings. They are the brands with complete structured data, topical content clusters, and third-party platform coverage. That includes YouTube, industry directories, and local review platforms.
Citations Matter Even When Clicks Do Not Follow
Overall, AI Overviews reduce organic click-through rates by 34 to 61%. But brands cited within AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to brands that are not cited. The strategy shifts from ranking to getting cited.
With more searches now ending without a click, traffic is no longer the only measure of visibility. Brand mentions, citations, and appearance frequency within AI Overviews are becoming meaningful success metrics. For many websites, being referenced without receiving a click still delivers value by increasing brand recognition and perceived authority.
The rules for search visibility changed faster in the first half of 2026 than most small business owners expected. The good news is that the fixes are practical and do not require a full website overhaul.
