Google says good SEO still drives visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here is what that means and what to check this week.

Google now has an official guide on how websites can show up in its AI features, like AI Overviews and AI Mode. The main message is simple. Good SEO still works, and there is no secret trick. This week, check your site in Search Console, update your Google Business Profile, and make sure your pages truly help your visitors.
What Google published
In May 2026, Google announced a new resource for website owners. It explains how to appear in generative AI features in Search. "Generative AI" means computer systems that write answers in plain language. The copy of the full guide on Google Search Central that I read is dated October 30, 2026.
The guide covers two features:
- AI Overviews. A short AI summary on some search results, with links to learn more.
- AI Mode. A place to ask longer questions, compare options and get a fuller answer with links to websites.
What Google says still matters
Google answers the big question directly. Yes, normal SEO still matters. SEO, or search engine optimization, means making your site easy for search engines to find and understand. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.
- Helpful content comes first. Google says content people find unique, compelling and useful will likely matter more in the long run than any other tip in the guide.
- Ask one question. Google suggests asking, "Is this content that my visitors would find satisfying?"
- Technical basics still count. How Google finds and processes your pages is still the core of how its AI systems get your information.
- Business details help. AI answers can include product listings and local business information. Google says Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles can help your products and services show up.
Google also mentions terms like Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). These names are common online. Google says many suggested "hacks" are not effective or supported by how Google Search actually works.
A few details worth knowing
How links get chosen
Google says both features may use a method called "query fan-out." The system runs several related searches on smaller parts of a question. This can show a wider set of links than a classic search. The two features may use different models, so their links can differ. Google also says AI Overviews often do not appear. They show only when Google decides they add something to normal results.
Who can be included
Google's page on AI features and your website says a page must be indexed and able to show in Search with a snippet. "Indexed" means Google has stored the page in its list of web pages. A snippet is the short text under a search result. That page says there are no additional technical requirements.
The newer guide adds one line. It says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible. The two pages word this differently, so it is worth checking Search Console yourself.
Tracking and control
Visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console, in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning people tend to spend more time on the site. To limit what Google shows from your pages, Google points to robots.txt for Googlebot. Robots.txt is a small file that tells search crawlers what they may visit. Google also names settings like nosnippet and data-nosnippet.
Steps you can take this week
- Verify your site in Search Console. Google recommends this to find technical problems quickly.
- Check your key pages. Your home, service and contact pages should be indexed and show in Search with a snippet.
- In Search Console, check if your site is included in Search generative AI features. The newer guide says sites must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible.
- Update your Google Business Profile. Check your hours, services and address.
- Sell products? Review Merchant Center. Google names Merchant Center feeds as a way to help products appear.
- Reread your top pages. Ask Google's question: would a visitor feel satisfied? Add clear answers to the questions customers ask you most.
- Skip the shortcuts. Google says many AEO and GEO "hacks" do not work for its Search.
- Watch the numbers. Check the Performance report. You can also track time on site and sales in tools like Google Analytics.
