Google refreshed its guide to showing up in AI answers. Here is what changed, what still works, and simple steps for this week.

AppWT Informative Multi-Lingual System
Google has updated its official guide on how websites can show up in its AI answers. The main message is simple: normal, good SEO still works, and there is no secret trick. This week, check your site in Search Console, update your Google Business Profile, and make your most important page more useful.
What changed this fall
First, two terms. AI Overviews are short summaries written by AI that can appear at the top of Google results. AI Mode is a chat-style search for harder questions, with links to websites.
Google first shared its guide to these features in May, according to the Google Search Central Blog. The version of the guide I read for this article is dated October 30, 2026.
Other recent changes from Google:
- On October 15, Google said it is adding more inline links inside AI answers and showing them higher up. An inline link is a link placed on words inside the answer. Google also said it will test a section at the top of some answers for official websites, according to the Google blog.
- In June, Google said AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users, in a post for website owners.
What is true now
Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. That means the basics of SEO still matter. SEO means the steps that help search engines find and understand your site.
Here are the key points from Google's own pages:
- Useful content matters most. Google says content that people find unique, compelling and useful will likely matter more than any other tip in its guide.
- Hacks are not needed. Google says many "hacks" sold under names like AEO or GEO are not effective or supported by how Google Search works.
- AI answers do not always show. Google's AI features page says AI Overviews appear only when they add value, so they often do not show.
- One question can become many searches. Google calls this "query fan-out." The AI runs several related searches on subtopics, which can show a wider set of links.
One point needs care, because Google's pages say different things. The AI features page says a page must be indexed and able to show a snippet, with no extra technical requirements. The newer guide says a site must also be included in generative AI features in Search Console. Google said it was testing this Search Console setting first with a subset of website owners in the UK. Google also said sites that opt out will not get traffic or impressions from these AI features.
Steps you can take this week
- Verify your site in Search Console. This free Google tool shows how your site does in search. If you see a setting for generative AI features, check that it matches what you want.
- Look at your traffic. Google says visits from AI features are counted in the Performance report, under the "Web" search type.
- Update your Google Business Profile. Google says AI answers can include local business details. A current profile can help. If you sell products, Google also points to Merchant Center.
- Improve one key page. Google's post stresses unique content, clear organization, a good page experience, and high quality images and video.
- Ask one plain question. Google suggests asking: "Is this content that my visitors would find satisfying?"
- Track time on site. Google says clicks from results with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning people stay longer. A tool like Google Analytics can show this.
- Check your controls. Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot control crawling. Tags like nosnippet limit what is shown. Make sure none of these block pages by mistake.
What to watch next
Search keeps changing. In May, Google announced a new AI-powered Search box. It also said people can ask follow-up questions from an AI Overview. Google also said it is expanding booking in Search to local experiences and services.
Google also said it is rolling out new Search Console insights. These show impressions, which pages appear in AI answers, and in what countries. Google said more metrics will come over time. When these reach your account, they will help you see what works.
