Google says good SEO still matters for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here is what changed and what to check on your site this week.

Google has updated its official guide on how websites can appear in its AI search features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. The main message is simple. Good SEO still works, and there is no secret trick. This week, check your site in Search Console. Make sure your key pages are helpful, indexed and easy for Google to read.
What changed
In May 2026, Google announced a new guide for site owners on the Google Search Central Blog. The guide itself, Google's Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features, shows an update date of October 30, 2026. A related page, AI Features and Your Website, is dated October 2, 2026.
Here is what the two main features do, in plain terms:
- AI Overviews are short summaries made by AI. They help people get the main idea of a hard question fast, with links to learn more.
- AI Mode is for deeper questions. People can compare options or explore a new idea. They get a longer answer with links to websites.
Google says both features may use a method called "query fan-out." This means the AI runs several related searches on smaller parts of a question. Because of this, Google says it can show a wider set of helpful links than a classic search.
Why the basics still work
SEO means search engine optimization. It is the work of helping search engines find and understand your pages. Google's guide says SEO best practices stay relevant. The reason is that its AI features are built on the same ranking and quality systems as regular Search.
You may have seen the terms AEO and GEO online. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Google says many suggested "hacks" tied to these terms are not effective or supported by how Google Search works.
Google says the biggest factor over time is content that people find unique, compelling and useful. It suggests one question to ask about any page: "Is this content that my visitors would find satisfying?" If the answer is yes, Google says you are on the right track.
What a page needs to show up
To appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed. Indexed means Google has stored the page so it can show it in results. The page must also be able to appear in Search with a snippet. A snippet is the short text under a result.
The two Google pages word the next part differently. The AI features page says there are no additional technical requirements. The newer guide says a site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible. Since the wording differs, it is worth checking your Search Console settings.
A few other facts from Google:
- AI Overviews only show when Google decides they add value beyond classic Search. They often do not appear.
- AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so the links they show can vary.
- Robots.txt is a small file that tells Google's crawler which pages it may visit. Google says this file is how site owners control crawling for Search, including AI features.
- To limit what text Google shows from a page, Google points to settings called nosnippet and data-nosnippet.
A short to-do list for this week
- Verify your site in Search Console. Google says this helps you find and fix technical problems quickly.
- Check your Performance report. Google says traffic from AI features is counted there, under the "Web" search type.
- Update your Google Business Profile. Google says this can help your services show up in AI answers and other results.
- Use Merchant Center if you sell products. Google says product feeds can help your items appear in AI responses.
- Review your top pages. Ask if each one would leave a visitor satisfied. Fix pages that would not.
- Track what visitors do. Tools like Google Analytics can show time on site and sales. Google says clicks from results with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality. That means people stay longer.
