The Short Answer First

Google rolled out new Search Console AI controls on July 22, 2026. The setting lets you keep your pages out of AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI features inside Google Discover. For most small business owners, the right move is to leave it on and stay visible, not opt out. Read on to understand why, and what to check in your account right now.

What Google Actually Released

For years, website owners had no direct way to control whether their content appeared inside Google's AI-generated answers. That changed this summer.

Google published official documentation for new Search Console AI controls that let website owners keep their pages out of AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the generative features inside Google Discover. The controls formalize a mechanism Google began testing in June 2026 under mounting regulatory pressure.

One setting blocks a site's content from appearing in those features while other sites still show up, and a second stops Google from linking to the content or using it to support AI answers.

For the first time, a publisher can be pulled out of Google's AI answers while staying fully indexed and ranked in ordinary search results.

You can find the new toggle in Search Console under Settings, in a section labeled "Search generative AI."

Why This Matters Right Now

AI Overviews are not a small experiment anymore. AI Overviews picked up a live news carousel, AI-generated images, and new citation displays in July 2026, while Search Console quietly gained the tools site owners have been asking for to control how their content shows up inside AI features.

For businesses that depend on organic visibility, this is a reminder that SEO today is as much about managing presence across AI surfaces as it is about ranking for blue links.

At the same time, the search landscape is splitting into two layers. Search is now split across classic search results, where pages still compete for clicks, and AI-generated answer environments, where systems synthesize, quote, cite, and compress information before a user visits a site.

That split creates a real question for every small business: which layer do you want to show up in?

The Case for Staying Opted In

The instinct to protect your content is understandable, but the data points the other way for most local and service businesses.

  • Recent studies suggest that being cited by Google at the top of the page in AI Overviews increases your chance of gaining a click to your website and may lead to additional direct traffic later.
  • Allowing Google to ground its answers about your business with information from your own website is also a good way to help own your narrative.
  • Research on zero-click search and AI reshaping SEO shows cited pages can appear even outside the top 10, which gives niche experts an opening.

In short, opting out removes you from a surface that is growing, while the clicks from traditional blue links are already declining on many informational searches.

What Opting Out Does NOT Cover

Before you make any decision, understand the limits of this control.

Content can still surface inside the Gemini app even after you opt out of Search AI. It runs on the same model family but through a different product and inference pipeline, and is explicitly outside the toggle's scope.

Opting out also does nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude. GEO sits alongside SEO, but the goal has changed from winning blue links to getting included in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Google AI features, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. The Search Console toggle touches only the Google surfaces listed above.

A New Social Media Reporting Bonus

The AI controls were not the only Search Console update this month. In early July, Google announced it is adding platform reporting in Search Console for X, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, and by the end of the month the reports rolled out globally. The new reports allow site owners to see the queries that lead to impressions and clicks to their social media and YouTube profiles, which posts are performing well, and spot trending content.

This is useful for small businesses that produce video or post consistently on social platforms. You can now connect your search data directly to what your social content is driving.

What to Do This Week

Here is a short checklist to act on right now:

  • Log into Google Search Console and look under Settings for the "Search generative AI" section to see if the control has rolled out to your property.
  • Before touching anything, pull your performance data for the last 90 days and note your top traffic pages. You need a baseline.
  • Many businesses still measure success with old metrics alone. They look at rank position and organic traffic, but miss a new question: is my content being used as source material by AI systems? Start asking that question.
  • Check whether your pages use clear headings, direct answers near the top, and FAQs. The pages most likely to get cited are clear, structured, current, and consistent across your site and off-site profiles.
  • Connect the new social reporting in Search Console to see whether your social content is driving discovery.

The Bigger Picture for Small Business Owners

The arrival of these controls is a signal, not just a tool. Google is acknowledging that AI answers now carry enough weight that publishers deserve a choice about participation. That is a meaningful shift.

Marketers should view broad GEO performance claims cautiously. Current evidence supports optimizing content quality and authority, but it does not demonstrate that specific GEO techniques reliably increase AI discoverability. The most consistent advice from researchers and practitioners alike is to write clear, credible, well-structured content that answers real questions, because that is what both search engines and AI systems tend to cite.

The businesses that stay opted in, keep their content sharp, and monitor their AI citation data now will have a measurable advantage over those who wait.
