The Short Answer
Google rolled out a new toggle inside Google Search Console in July 2026 that lets website owners choose whether their pages appear inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. At the same time, Google added a dedicated AI performance report so you can finally measure how your content is doing inside those AI surfaces. For small business owners, this is one of the most practical search updates of the year.
What Changed and When
The control launched first in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2026, under a mandate from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, and took effect on June 17. Google then began rolling it out to selected site owners in the United States in late July 2026.
Two separate settings are part of this rollout:
- AI feature opt-out toggle: Blocks your site's content from appearing inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover, while other sites can still show up in those features.
- Citation block: A second setting that stops Google from linking to your content or using it to support AI-generated answers altogether.
Alongside the toggle, Google is rolling out a new AI performance report inside Search Console. This report gives site owners actual data on how their content performs within AI responses, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Until now, that data simply did not exist in any official Google tool.
Why This Matters for Your Business
AI Overviews now answer many searches before a user ever clicks a link. When an AI Overview appears, click-through rates on the organic results below it drop significantly. Being cited inside that AI block is now one of the most valuable positions in search.
Here is the scale of what you are dealing with. Google has stated that AI Overviews reaches over 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. Those are vendor-stated figures with no independent audit, but the direction is clear: these surfaces are large and growing.
July 2026 also brought other AI Overview additions worth tracking:
- A live Top Stories news carousel is now fully live inside AI Overviews for US mobile users.
- AI-generated images and new citation displays were added to the AI Overviews experience.
- Google increased the number of inline links inside AI responses to make it easier for users to click through to source websites.
SEO today is as much about managing your presence across AI surfaces as it is about ranking for the traditional blue links below them.
Should You Opt Out?
For most small businesses, the answer is no. Here is the logic.
Google has confirmed that opting out will not be used as a ranking signal for standard search results outside of the AI features. Your regular rankings stay intact. But if you opt out, Google has stated clearly that sites choosing to opt out will not receive traffic or impressions from its generative AI features. You remove yourself from the fastest-growing surface in search right as it becomes measurable.
The businesses gaining ground right now are the ones that started making their content easy for AI to read, trust, and cite. Waiting is the more expensive strategy.
What to Do Right Now
You do not need to overhaul your entire website. Focus on a few high-priority steps:
- Check your Search Console access. Look for the new AI performance report and the toggle under your site settings. The rollout is gradual, so not every account has it yet as of late July 2026.
- Identify your top pages first. Find the pages with high impressions but low click-through rates. Those are the pages most affected by AI Overviews and the best candidates to optimize for citation.
- Put the direct answer near the top of each page. AI systems pull from pages that give a clear, quotable answer early. Use plain language and short paragraphs.
- Add or improve structured data. Product, FAQ, and Review schema continue to pay off for local and e-commerce businesses because they make content easier for Google to parse and cite.
- Build E-E-A-T signals. Add author bios, review dates, original data, and contact information. Google's systems reward content that shows first-hand experience and accountability.
- Track branded search volume as a KPI. Even when a user does not click through, being cited in an AI answer drives branded searches later. That is measurable and valuable.
The Bigger Picture for Small Business
The GEO software category now includes multiple platforms built specifically to measure how often and where your brand gets cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, and others. A year ago that measurement did not exist in a practical form. Today it is a standard part of serious digital marketing planning.
Small and mid-size businesses that publish clear, structured, current, and consistent content can still earn citations even if they are not a household name. The playing field is not as tilted as it looks. Niche experts with well-organized pages can appear inside AI answers even without ranking in the top ten of traditional search results.
The window to build that foundation before a likely Google broad core update in August or September 2026 is open right now. Getting your content into citation-ready shape today puts you in a much stronger position when that update lands.
