Google confirmed on August 31, 2026, that its generative AI performance reports and Search generative AI controls are now live in Search Console for every website owner in the world. If you log into Search Console today and look under the Performance tab, you should see an expandable section dedicated entirely to how your site appears inside AI-powered search results. This is the first time Google has given small business owners a direct window into their AI visibility, and it changes how you should think about your website.
What Exactly Launched on August 31
Two separate tools arrived together, and it helps to understand both.
The first is the Generative AI Performance Report. The report details impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover, categorized by page, country, and date. The reporting includes impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates, but does not include click data.
The second is the Search Generative AI Control. Google is rolling out globally a toggle that lets site owners block their content from appearing in AI features such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, or AI Overviews in Discover, allowing sites to opt out of their content being used in AI features, either as links or for grounding.
Google released both features to everyone globally after a slow rollout that began in the first week of June. If you still do not see the report, it may be because there is not enough data for your site to have the report. That is normal for smaller sites early in the rollout.
Why This Matters for a Small Business in Michigan
This update arrives at a moment when AI-powered search is mainstream, not experimental. AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. If your customers are using Google, a growing share of them are seeing AI-generated answers before they ever reach a traditional list of links.
Until now, you had no reliable way to measure whether your site was feeding those answers or being left out. Teams building toward visibility in generated answers will find the impressions and pages dimensions are the closest thing to a scoreboard that generative engine optimization has had so far.
Put simply: you can finally see the score. And once you can see it, you can work to improve it.
How to Find the Report in Search Console
Log into Google Search Console and follow these steps:
- Click Performance in the left sidebar.
- Look for an expandable tab or section labeled Generative AI or Search generative AI below the main performance chart.
- Use the page, country, and device filters to identify which content earns the most AI impressions.
- Compare AI impression trends over time to see whether your content changes are helping.
An empty or unavailable report does not automatically indicate a Search Console configuration problem. Give it time if your site is newer or lower-traffic.
Should You Use the Opt-Out Toggle?
The opt-out control is a property-level switch, meaning it applies to your entire website rather than individual pages. Before touching it, weigh the trade-off carefully.
People are asking Search entirely new kinds of questions, creating new opportunities for brands, publishers, and creators to reach people. Opting out removes your content from that opportunity entirely. For most small businesses, that is the wrong move.
There are narrow cases where opting out makes sense: sites with sensitive client information, subscription content that loses value if summarized, or publishers with a specific editorial reason to keep content out of AI responses. For the typical small business trying to attract new customers, AI impressions are free exposure you want to keep.
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has set a timeline giving Google until March 2027 to introduce page-level controls for generative AI features, offering a more detailed option compared to the current property-level setting. More granular controls are coming. For now, the all-or-nothing toggle is what you have.
What Actually Drives AI Impressions
The report tells you your current score. The following actions improve it over time.
- Write clear, factual service and product pages. Google says the same foundational SEO best practices apply to its generative AI search features. Pages need to be indexed and eligible for Google Search, and there are no additional technical requirements specifically for appearing as supporting links in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Answer specific questions directly. Prioritize commercial content and make your best answers easy to extract. AI systems pull direct, confident answers.
- Keep technical basics solid. Technical optimization still matters. Fast load times, mobile responsiveness, and crawlability help both search engines and AI systems access your content.
- Avoid low-value AI-generated filler. Google's August spam update warns that using AI to manipulate search results is not a good long-term strategy.
- Update your most important pages regularly. AI models favor clear, expert-authored, recent, evidence-backed content reinforced through consistent publishing.
One More Thing: The August 2026 Spam Update
The new AI reporting tools were not the only significant Google event in August. Google's most recent confirmed spam update began on August 18, 2026, and lasted approximately two days and 16 hours according to Google's Search Status Dashboard. If your rankings shifted around that time, the spam update is the most likely cause, not the AI reporting rollout. Review your Search Console data for both traditional and AI performance to get the full picture.
Your Next Three Steps
- Log into Google Search Console this week and check whether the Generative AI performance report has data for your site.
- Identify which pages earn the most AI impressions and study what makes them work. Apply those patterns to your other service pages.
- Leave the opt-out toggle off unless you have a specific business reason to flip it. AI impressions are a visibility channel worth protecting.
If your Search Console report shows thin or no AI impressions, your content likely needs structural work before Google's AI systems will cite it. That is exactly where AppWT can help. We build and optimize websites that earn visibility in both traditional search and AI-powered results. What does the Google Search Console AI performance report show?
It shows how often your pages appeared as impressions inside Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. You can filter by page, country, device, and date. Click data is not included yet.
Can I opt my website out of Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Yes. Google added a toggle inside Search Console called the Search generative AI control. Flipping it excludes your content from appearing as links or as grounding material in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI features in Discover. Think carefully before opting out, because those impressions represent free visibility.
My AI performance report shows no data. Is something broken?
Not necessarily. Google states that a report may not appear if your site has not yet received enough impressions inside supported AI search features. An empty report is not a Search Console configuration error. Keep publishing quality content and check back in a few weeks.
