The Short Answer
For the first time, you can now see exactly how often Google shows your pages inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google launched dedicated Search Generative AI Performance Reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026. If you have not checked your account yet, this is the first place to start this week.
Why This Report Matters for Small Businesses
Since Google AI Overviews began displacing traditional search results at scale, business owners have watched traffic numbers shift without having any official data to explain why. The SEO industry lived with an uncomfortable paradox: knowing with certainty that traffic was declining because of generative answers, but having no official Google data to quantify how much visibility was being won or lost inside those answers.
This is the first time Google has broken out AI-feature visibility as its own report, closing a gap that has left brands unable to measure the part of Search now answered by AI. That is a big deal for any small business that depends on Google to bring in new customers.
What the Report Shows
The new Search Console reports are designed to give you dedicated views of your impressions within generative AI features on Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as generative AI features in Discover.
The reports cover five data dimensions: impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search only), and dates with hourly through monthly granularity. That means you can see which specific pages on your site are showing up inside AI Overviews and how that changes over time.
What the Report Does NOT Show (Yet)
Before you get too excited, know the current limits.
- No click data. The reporting includes impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates but does not include click data. You can see that Google is showing your page inside an AI answer, but you cannot yet see how many people clicked through to your site from that answer.
- No ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude data. Google Search Console only measures performance within Google Search. If you want to know whether ChatGPT or Perplexity is citing your business, you need separate tools or manual testing.
- Click data timeline is unclear. Google may add clicks and other metrics later based on feedback, but there is no confirmed timeline.
How to Find the Report in Your Account
Log into Google Search Console and look in the left-side menu under the Performance section. The new Generative AI report displays underneath the Search results report. If you do not see it yet, the rollout is still expanding. Google announced the reports on 3 June 2026 and expanded access to more sites on 23 June. A wider global rollout is planned, but no specific date has been confirmed.
The Opt-Out Toggle: Should You Use It?
Google also added a toggle inside Search Console that lets you remove your content from AI features entirely. Go to Settings, then Search generative AI in your Search Console property, and choose to exclude your site's links and content from Search generative AI features. This affects AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI in Discover only, not regular search rankings.
For most small businesses, opting out is the wrong move. Being cited inside an AI Overview puts your brand in front of a buyer who is actively researching. Trust now starts before the click. Brand mentions, reviews, expert profiles, case evidence, and strong branded pages matter more because many users may see your name in an AI answer before they ever visit your site.
What This Means for Your SEO Strategy Right Now
Google has been clear that there is no separate magic formula for AI visibility. Google is direct: optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO. The same content quality that helped you rank before still applies.
That said, the content types that earn AI citations have become more specific. Here is what the data consistently shows works:
- Clear, structured pages. The pages most likely to get cited are clear, structured, current, and consistent across your site and off-site profiles.
- Original proof and expertise. Founders and small teams can still win by publishing direct definitions, comparison pages, FAQs, case studies, and proof-backed guides instead of pumping out generic AI text.
- Technical hygiene. Clean sitemaps, internal links, strong headings, explicit entities, and short answer blocks help your pages appear in both classic search and AI-generated answers.
- Off-site consistency. Make sure your business name, address, phone number, and description match across your website, Google Business Profile, and any directories where you are listed. AI systems cross-check these signals.
A Practical 3-Step Action Plan
You do not need to overhaul your entire website this week. Start with these three actions:
- Step 1: Check the report. Log into Search Console and look for the Generative AI report. Note which pages are getting AI impressions and which are getting none.
- Step 2: Prioritize your top service pages. If your main service pages are not appearing in AI Overviews, review them for clear headings, short answer-style introductions, and factual detail that a generative AI would find easy to cite.
- Step 3: Test your own AI visibility. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Ask questions your ideal customers would ask. See whether your business comes up. If it does not, you have a content gap to fill.
The Bottom Line
Google's new AI performance reports give small business owners a real data point, not just a theory, to work from. Ranking number one on Google no longer guarantees clicks; being cited inside AI Overviews is the new visibility currency. The businesses that stay visible are the ones that treat content quality and technical structure as ongoing work, not a one-time project.
