The Short Answer
Google added a dedicated Generative AI performance report to Search Console on June 3, 2026, and expanded access to more sites on June 23. For the first time, this report separates AI Overview and AI Mode impressions from standard organic data. If you own a small business website, this is the first native tool that lets you see whether Google's AI features are pulling from your pages -- and it is free to use right now.
Why This Matters More Than a Typical Update
Before this report existed, business owners had no official way to measure whether their content appeared inside AI-generated answers. Ever since AI Overviews rolled out globally in 2024, the SEO industry had to work with an uncomfortable reality: knowing that traffic was declining because of generative answers, but having no official Google data to quantify how much visibility was being won or lost inside those answers.
That gap matters because the stakes are real. Where AI Overviews appear, they now reduce the click-through rate for the top-ranking page by up to 58 percent, dropping from 7.3 percent to 1.6 percent on AI Overview keywords, according to Ahrefs analysis of 300,000 keywords. If your page is being cited inside the overview, you may recover some of that lost ground. If your page is invisible to AI entirely, you are losing qualified attention before anyone ever visits your site.
What the Report Shows (and What It Does Not)
The report breaks data down five ways: impressions (how often your URLs appeared in AI features), pages (which URLs appeared), countries, devices, and dates with hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly granularity.
That is useful. But the report has a clear limitation right now. It shows impressions, pages, countries, and devices -- but no clicks, CTR, or query data yet. You can see that your page appeared inside an AI answer 500 times last month, but you cannot yet see how many of those impressions led to a visit.
One more thing to know: this report covers Google only. Traffic that originates from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic's Claude, or the standalone Google Gemini app is considered AI referral traffic and needs to be tracked using a web analytics platform such as Google Analytics 4, where it would appear as referral traffic from those platforms' domains.
How to Find the Report in Search Console
Access is still rolling out, so not every account will see it yet. When it appears, the path is straightforward.
- Log in to Google Search Console and select your property.
- Open the Performance section, where a dedicated Generative AI tab now sits alongside the standard Search results view.
- Filter by page to see which specific URLs earn AI impressions.
- Filter by country and device to see where and how your AI visibility concentrates.
- If your account does not show the tab yet, check back every few weeks. Some early observers note reporting data from around mid-May 2026 onward, so do not expect a long history of retroactive AI impression data.
The Opt-Out Toggle: Should You Use It?
The report comes with a new control that lets you remove your content from AI features entirely. The toggle is a control within Search Console that lets you opt your site out of appearing in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and related generative AI features. If you opt out, you will not receive impressions or traffic from these features. However, opting out does not affect your rankings in standard organic search results.
For most small businesses, opting out makes little sense right now. AI Overviews are expanding into local, commercial, and comparison searches -- the exact searches that drive leads. The better move is to understand your current AI impression baseline and then improve the content that is not showing up.
Four Practical Steps to Take This Week
- Check for access. Log into Search Console and look for the Generative AI tab under Performance. If it is there, note which pages already have impressions and which have none.
- Fix your crawlable structure. Technical structure still matters. Clean sitemaps, internal links, strong headings, explicit entities, and short answer blocks help your pages appear in both classic search and AI-generated answers.
- Build trust signals off your own site. Trust now starts before the click. Brand mentions, reviews, expert profiles, case evidence, and strong branded pages matter more because many users may see your name in an AI answer before they ever visit your site.
- Update time-sensitive content. For fast-moving queries, content older than 90 days enters a decay window where it starts losing retrieval priority to newer pages. For time-sensitive categories such as pricing, platform features, and regulatory topics, aim to review and update every 6 to 9 months at minimum.
A Note on the Broader GEO Picture
One important caution worth raising: a review of 45 studies on generative engine optimization (GEO) concludes that no evaluated technique consistently improves organic discoverability, downstream traffic, or business outcomes across AI platforms. That does not mean you should ignore AI visibility. It means you should focus on fundamentals -- original content, clear structure, genuine authority in your field -- rather than chasing tactics that promise overnight results.
A single optimization strategy will not produce consistent visibility across the AI answer layer, especially since ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity each use different criteria for what they cite. The Search Console report gives you a starting point for Google. Tracking AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4 covers the rest.
