The Short Answer

Google launched dedicated Generative AI Performance Reports inside Search Console on June 3, 2026. For the first time, small business owners can see a direct count of how often their pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, not just in traditional search results. If you have not checked your account yet, now is the time to look.

Why This Matters More Than Most Google Updates

AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of all Google search queries, according to independent tracking data published this month. When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates drop somewhere between 34% and 61% depending on the query type. Those numbers are not projections. They are what site owners are measuring right now in mid-2026.

What that means for a small business is straightforward: ranking on page one no longer guarantees the traffic it once did. The new goal is getting your page cited inside the AI answer itself, which puts your brand in front of the user even when they do not click through to your site.

Until June 2026, measuring that kind of visibility required third-party tools and a lot of guesswork. The new Search Console reports change that, at least partially.

What the New Report Actually Shows You

The Generative AI Performance Report sits inside the Performance section of Search Console as a dedicated tab alongside the standard Search results view. Here is what it includes at launch:

  • Impressions by page: Which URLs on your site appeared inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, or generative AI features in Discover.
  • Impressions by country: Where in the world your AI-featured content is being seen.
  • Impressions by device: Whether those appearances happen on mobile, desktop, or tablet.
  • Impressions over time: Hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly granularity so you can spot trends.

What the report does not show yet is also important to understand. Click data is not included. You cannot see which query triggered the impression, whether the user clicked through to your site, or where inside the AI answer your content appeared. Google has said it will add more metrics over time but has not given a firm timeline.

The data does still appear inside your overall Search Console Performance report as well. The new dedicated tab just gives you a cleaner, separate view of AI-specific visibility.

A Practical Starting Point for Small Business Owners

You do not need to overhaul your entire website to act on this. Start here:

  • Open Search Console and find the Generative AI tab. It lives under the Performance section. If you do not see it yet, the rollout is still expanding and your site may not have access. Keep checking back.
  • Export your top pages by AI impressions. Build a short list of the pages appearing most often in the report. Note whether they are service pages, blog posts, FAQ pages, or your about page.
  • Check those pages for clarity and structure. Pages that earn AI citations tend to be clear, structured, current, and consistent with your off-site profiles. If a page is vague or thin, strengthen it with direct answers to real customer questions.
  • Add internal links from high-impression pages to your contact and service pages. If Google is already putting your content in front of users through AI answers, make sure those users can find their way to a conversion point when they do land on your site.
  • Watch for patterns over at least 30 days, not single-day spikes. One spike means little. Repeated visibility across time, device, and multiple pages is the signal worth acting on.

The Opt-Out Toggle: Should You Use It?

Google also added a content opt-out toggle that became effective June 17, 2026. It lets you remove your content from AI features entirely without touching your regular organic rankings. This is a real choice, and it is not right for every business.

If your revenue depends on users arriving at your website, such as for lead generation, e-commerce, or ad revenue, opting out may protect your short-term click traffic. If your goal is building brand authority and you benefit from being cited as a trusted source, staying in the AI features is likely better for your long-term position. There is no universal right answer. It comes down to your business model and how your customers actually buy.

What About All the GEO Advice You Have Been Reading?

A research review published in late July 2026 looked at 45 studies on Generative Engine Optimization and found that no single technique consistently improves AI visibility across platforms. That finding lines up with what Google itself has said: there is no separate AI search strategy. The same fundamentals that have always made websites trustworthy and readable are what AI systems use to decide what to cite.

Clean sitemaps, strong headings, structured data, fast load times, and content that directly answers customer questions are still the foundation. What has changed is that you now have a native measurement tool to see whether that work is producing AI impressions, and that is a significant step forward for any small business trying to make smart decisions about their website.

What to Do This Week

Log into Google Search Console, check for the Generative AI Performance tab, and note which pages are showing up. If your most important service pages are not there but a random blog post is, that tells you something. Use it to prioritize where you spend your content and technical improvement time next.
