Google's spam rules now cover tricks aimed at AI answers. Here is what changed this year and what to check on your site this week.

Google has now run three spam updates in 2026, and its rules clearly cover tricks aimed at AI answers. If you bought links, paid for AI citations, or used shortcuts to get named in AI results, stop and remove them this week. Then track your numbers calmly, because recovery can take months.
What changed this year
A spam update is a change to the automated tools Google uses to find spam. Google says these tools run all the time, but it sometimes makes notable improvements. One of these tools is SpamBrain, an AI-based system, according to Google's spam updates page.
Here is the timeline from news reports:
- March 2026: finished in under a day, per Search Engine Journal.
- June 2026: ran from June 24 to June 26, about two days.
- August 2026: began August 18. It was the third spam update this year, per later coverage.
Google called the June update a normal spam update, according to SEOPress. SEOZoom also described it as routine. Search Engine Roundtable reported that it felt like a big one and seemed to start a bit earlier. Google did not announce new spam policies with the August update. Its spam updates page has not changed since December 2025.
AI answers are now covered by spam rules
Google's spam policies now say spam includes trying to manipulate generative AI responses in Search. Generative AI answers are summaries written by a computer. Examples are AI Overviews at the top of results and AI Mode.
SEOPress reports the policy page was updated on May 15 to make this clear. Search Engine Journal reported that Google clarified in May that this includes buying or altering citations. A citation is a link to your site inside an AI answer.
So tactics built to game AI Overviews or AI Mode can be treated as spam under the same policy as older tricks. The policies also list familiar problems:
- Cloaking: showing search engines different content than people see.
- Hidden text or links: content placed only for search engines, not easy for people to see.
- Keyword stuffing: filling a page with keywords in an unnatural way.
- Link spam: links made mainly to manipulate rankings.
- Doorway abuse: many similar pages made to rank, which lead to less useful pages.
SEOPress also noted that Google said enforcement of a policy on back button hijacking would start June 15. It said the June update may have included this. That is a possibility, not a confirmed fact.
What recovery looks like
Google says sites that break its policies may rank lower or not appear at all. If a site makes fixes, Google's systems may learn over a period of months that the site now follows the rules. A quick bounce back is not the expectation.
Links work differently. Google says that when it removes the effect of spammy links, any ranking benefit from those links is lost. That benefit cannot be regained. Cleaning up still matters, but do not expect the old boost to return.
A freelance SEO consultant quoted by Search Engine Journal said a sudden decline does not automatically mean your content is bad. In her words, "SEO recovery starts with diagnosis, not panic."
Steps for this week
- Mark the dates. Note June 24 to 26 and August 18 onward in your reports. This helps you tell one update's effects from another.
- Read the policy list. Compare each item above to your own pages, links and past vendor work.
- Say no to paid citations. If anyone offers to buy or change mentions of you in AI answers, decline. That falls under the spam rules.
- Find the pattern. Check which page types, searches and site folders lost traffic. Look for what they have in common.
- Read the AI report with care. Search Console is Google's free tool for site owners. Its AI report counts an impression when a link to your page shows in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Links hidden behind an expand button count only when someone opens them. The report has no click data yet, so a low number does not mean you are missing from results.
- Track searches for your name. Similarweb found that 55.9% of later traffic came through branded search after people saw a ChatGPT recommendation. Branded search means people typing your business name. That data came from a U.S. desktop panel in finance, travel and beauty.
