Google's newest guide says regular search basics still drive AI answers. Here is what that means for your holiday sales this week.

In 2026, Google published a new guide on AI search for site owners. It says the same basics that help you show up in regular search also help you show up in AI answers. This week, check your site in Search Console, update your business details on Google, and make your product pages answer the questions shoppers ask.
What changed this fall
Google has two main AI features. AI Overviews give a quick summary for some searches and link to helpful sources. AI Mode helps with questions that need more exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons. Both show links to websites that support the answer.
In May, Google Search Central announced a new guide for site owners. The newest version of Google's AI optimization guide says SEO best practices still matter. SEO means the steps that help search engines find and understand your pages. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems.
The guide also talks about terms like GEO and AEO. Google says many suggested "hacks" are not effective or supported by how Google Search works. Its main advice is simple. Make content that your visitors would find helpful and satisfying.
One point needs care. Google's page on AI features and your website says a page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet, a short text preview. It says there are no additional technical requirements. The newer guide says a site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. The two pages read differently, so check your own Search Console settings.
Why it matters for holiday sales
Shoppers are using AI and doing more research this year. Here is what the surveys found:
- A PwC survey, reported by Sparklight Business, found 29 percent of consumers plan to use AI for holiday shopping, up from 22 percent in 2025.
- BigCommerce reports that roughly 30% of consumers compare more retailers than they did two or three years ago. Also, 27% spend more time researching products.
- An NRF survey cited by DoorDash found 43% of holiday shoppers planned to start before November. It also found 64% are likely to wait until Thanksgiving weekend for most of their shopping.
- A Bain report found 40 percent of consumers plan an even split between online and in-store shopping.
A Glossy survey of 90 brand and retailer professionals found 46% plan to use their own online store this season, down from 69% in 2025. Still, owned stores and owned websites remain the top two sales channels.
Steps to take this week
- Verify your site in Search Console. This is a free Google tool that shows how your site does in search. Clicks from AI features appear in the Performance report under the "Web" search type.
- Make sure your key pages can be indexed. Indexed means Google has stored the page so it can show it. Check that your robots.txt file, which tells search engines what they may visit, does not block Googlebot.
- Update your business details. Google says a Google Business Profile and Merchant Center feeds can help your products and services show in AI responses and other results.
- Fill in every product detail. BigCommerce notes that each missing detail gives shoppers another reason to keep comparing. Add sizes, materials, uses and clear photos.
- Show what cannot be price-matched. Bain says shoppers can compare prices easily with AI. It suggests exclusive items, your own brands or unique bundles.
- Track what happens next. Use a tool like Google Analytics to see time on site and sales. Google says clicks from results with AI Overviews tend to stay on the site longer.
What you can skip
Google says specific optimization is not required for AI Overviews and AI Mode. You do not need special AI code or tricks. Spend your time on clear, useful pages instead.
Be careful with robots.txt. Google says AI is built into Search, so robots.txt rules for Googlebot control how your site is crawled for Search overall. Blocking Googlebot may keep your pages out of Search. If you want to limit what text Google shows, Google points to tools like nosnippet.
