Shopify and Google share helpful guides. Here is how to write clear product descriptions, use AI tools safely, and help Google read your pages.

Shopify and Google share helpful advice on product listings. Their advice fits together well. Write specific, honest descriptions for one real customer, read any AI-written text closely before you publish it, and help Google read your product details. This week, start with the product pages that get the fewest clicks or sales.
What a good product description does now
A product description explains what a product is and why it is worth buying, says Shopify's writing guide. The best ones speak to one ideal customer, not to everyone. Use the word "you." Answer the questions a shopper would ask you in a store.
Think about what might make a buyer stop. If they wonder whether the product fits their routine, say who it is for. If they worry about quality, say what it is made of and how it holds up over time.
The Shopify Help Center says to be specific. A vague line like "excellent product quality" tells the customer nothing. It might even make them doubt you. Every claim should be factual. If you say your product is the best, give proof, or quote a customer who says so.
Know the difference between features and benefits. A feature is what the product has. A benefit is what that feature does for the buyer. Shopify's SEO guide gives this example:
- Feature: "waterproof rubber foot"
- Benefit: "blocks moisture from getting in"
Short bullet lists make both easy to scan. Also, do not copy the maker's description word for word. Shopify's help page says your own words keep the page unique to search engines. Shopify's SEO guide also reports that a 2025 Akeneo survey found 34% of consumers were frustrated by incomplete or unclear product descriptions.
Using AI writing tools the right way
Shopify has a tool called Sidekick. It is an AI helper that can draft a description from details you give it, such as a product title and keywords. Shopify's page on generating product descriptions is clear on one point. You are responsible for the accuracy of everything you publish, even text the tool wrote.
AI text can add things you did not ask for. It may list benefits you never gave it. It may use facts from similar products. So read every line before you save.
A few tips from Shopify's page:
- Give at least a product title and 2 features or keywords.
- More details lead to more accurate, unique text.
- You can ask for a tone or writing style in your prompt.
- Write your prompt in the same language you want the description in.
- Use a desktop computer. The tool does not work on iPhone or Android.
Helping Google read your products
Structured data is a standard, machine-readable format for page information. In plain terms, it is a small label in your page code that tells Google "this is the price" or "this is in stock." Google Search Central says it can help your listing show price, availability, review ratings and shipping details right in search results, including Google Images and Google Lens.
Google's ecommerce structured data guide lists other labels too. They cover your return policies, your store hours if you have a physical shop, and product reviews.
Structured data is not required to show up in Google Search. Neither is Google Merchant Center, which is Google's tool for uploading a list of your products. But Merchant Center is required for the Google Shopping tab. Google says using both gives you the most chances to appear.
Keep your data matched. Google's page on sharing product data notes that when a product sells out, your site may update right away while Merchant Center updates later. Google suggests telling Merchant Center to update itself from your website when it finds a mismatch.
This matters because search is busy. Shopify's SEO guide reports that Google said people shop across Google more than 1 billion times per day.
Steps you can take this week
- Find your weakest pages. Look for low views, low clicks or low sales. Fix those first.
- Rewrite the first lines for one ideal customer. Answer one worry they might have.
- Swap vague words for facts, such as size, material or care steps.
- Pair each feature with its benefit in a short bullet list.
- If you use an AI tool, give it real details. Then check every claim.
- Check that price and stock match on your site and in Merchant Center.
- Pick a few numbers to track, like sales per page, so you can see which descriptions work.
