Check Search Console this week. Google has finished rolling out its generative AI performance reports, so your business can finally see how often your pages show up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the reports, which track AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, have now rolled out to all sites worldwide, following a phased rollout that began in June. The note added to Google's original blog post reads: "As of August 31, 2026, we've rolled out these insights to all websites worldwide."
This is the first free, first-party look most small businesses have ever had at their AI search visibility. Here is what it shows, what it hides, and what to do with it.
Where to Find Your Report
Open Search Console, go to Performance, and look for Generative AI in the left-hand menu. It sits alongside your usual search results report, and Discover has its own Generative AI entry underneath.
If you do not see it, do not panic. Google's help pages for both the Search and Discover reports still mention that the rollout is in progress, and Google has said sites without enough AI impressions might not see a report at all. Data also only starts accumulating from the point Google begins collecting it for your property, so early graphs can look sparse.
What the Report Actually Shows
The reports detail impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover, categorized by page, country, and date, with the Search report adding a device breakdown. It does not include click data.
One more thing worth understanding before you get excited about a traffic bump: this is not new traffic. The data was already flowing into your overall performance report, and the new view simply isolates it. Think of it as a filter, not a discovery.
What It Leaves Out
The gaps matter as much as the data. The report currently shows impressions only. There are no clicks, no click-through rate, and no average position. Specific user prompts are also not disclosed.
So you can learn that a page appeared inside an AI answer. You cannot learn which question triggered it or whether anyone clicked through. That limits precision, but it does not make the report useless. Knowing which of your pages Google's AI systems trust is still a big step up from guessing.
Five Ways a Small Business Can Use the Data
- Set a baseline now. Export this month's impressions by page. You cannot measure progress against a number you never wrote down.
- Study the pages that already win. The pages already earning AI impressions are your best models: study their structure and clarity, then apply those patterns across the rest of your site.
- Look for the service page gap. Knowing which pages earn impressions gives you something to investigate: whether certain topics show up more often, and whether informational pages get picked up while service pages do not. If your blog posts appear but your services pages never do, your money pages need clearer answers.
- Compare AI impressions to classic search. Comparing AI impressions against traditional search performance is the fastest way to find gaps and opportunities. A page with strong rankings and zero AI impressions is a rewrite candidate.
- Watch the trend line, not the daily number. Month over month movement tells a story. Day to day noise does not.
The Setting You Should Look At but Probably Leave Alone
The same rollout brought a second change that deserves attention. The Search generative AI opt-out control went global on the same date. It is a property-specific setting located in Settings within Search Console, and it lets you exclude your site's links and content from the same three surfaces the reports measure.
Publishers who license content may have reasons to use it. For most local service businesses, turning it on means removing yourself from the surfaces where more and more buying research now happens. Look at the setting so you know it exists, confirm nobody enabled it by accident, and move on.
Why Impressions Matter More Than They Used To
AI answers are taking up more of the screen. Google confirmed on August 27 and 28, 2026 that AI Overviews can automatically expand into a longer, more detailed answer for queries where its systems judge a fuller response is more useful, removing the manual "Show More" button in those cases. Days earlier, Google's generative UI feature, which builds custom visual layouts and interactive tools on the fly, began moving out of AI Mode and into AI Overviews.
Neither change is a ranking algorithm update. Both are interface changes that affect how much of the page a searcher sees before reaching a website. That is the real shift. Being mentioned in the answer is becoming the win, and the click is becoming the bonus. BrightEdge data shows search impressions jumped 49 percent year over year while click-through rates dropped 30 percent.
A 30-Minute Monthly Routine
You do not need a new software subscription to act on this. Put this on your calendar once a month:
- Open Performance, then Generative AI, and set the date range to the last 28 days.
- Sort the Pages tab by impressions and copy the top 10 into a spreadsheet.
- Note any page that dropped out of the top 10 since last month, then reread it. Outdated pages are easy for AI systems to skip.
- Pick one service page with no AI impressions. Add a short, direct answer near the top, a clear heading that matches how customers ask the question, and one piece of proof only your business can offer.
- Check that the page loads fast, is indexable, and is not hidden behind scripts or click-to-open sections.
What This Means for Your Strategy
The fundamentals have not changed. Clear writing, accurate structured data, fast pages, and content that says something specific still win. Generic advice has nothing to quote, and this is the same discipline that has always made content easy to understand, now measured on a new surface.
What changed is accountability. Before this report, AI visibility was a topic you argued about. Now it is a number you can pull up on a Tuesday morning. Use it to settle debates, kill weak content, and double down on the pages that already earn a spot inside the answer.

Where is the generative AI report in Search Console?
Open Search Console, click Performance in the left menu, and look for the Generative AI entry. It sits next to your usual Search results report, and Discover has its own generative AI view underneath.
Does the report show clicks from AI Overviews or AI Mode?
No. As of the rollout announcement it shows impressions only, with no clicks, no click-through rate, and no average position. Clicks from AI features still roll into your overall search performance numbers.
Why do I not see the report on my property yet?
Google's help pages still note that not every property has access, and sites without enough AI impressions may not see a report at all. That is not a sign that something is broken on your site.
