The Short Answer: Your Yelp Profile Now Feeds ChatGPT

On July 23, 2026, Axios broke the news that Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI, giving ChatGPT a direct pipeline of real-time local recommendation data. This is not a future plan. The deal was first disclosed in Yelp's February 2026 earnings report, and the full operational scope became public in late July. If you own a local business and you have ignored your Yelp profile for years, that decision just got a lot more expensive.

What the Deal Actually Means

When someone types a local question into ChatGPT, such as "best HVAC company in Grand Rapids" or "plumber near me in Lansing," ChatGPT can now pull Yelp star ratings, review snippets, photos, and business details directly into its answer. Yelp branding and links appear alongside that content, though OpenAI controls how it is displayed.

Here is the part most business owners miss: for local queries, ChatGPT does not crawl your website the way Google does. It draws from licensed databases from aggregators like Yelp. That means your local AI visibility depends on your listings with those aggregators as much as on your website itself.

A "Request a Quote" feature is also coming, which will allow ChatGPT users to contact local service providers directly through the AI, without ever visiting your website. That changes the game for any trade, service, or home-services business.

Why This Is Different from Google

Google reads your website and ranks it based on content quality, backlinks, and hundreds of other signals. ChatGPT, for local recommendations, is buying structured data from companies that have already organized it. Your Google rankings do not automatically translate into ChatGPT visibility. You need both strategies working at the same time.

Think of it this way: Google rewards your website. ChatGPT rewards your data quality across the directories and platforms it has licensed. Two different systems, two different sets of requirements.

What You Can Control Right Now

OpenAI has not published exactly how it ranks local businesses inside its answers. But the data it draws on is your Yelp profile. That means the following factors are now directly tied to whether ChatGPT recommends you:

  • Review volume and recency. A business with 12 reviews from 2021 looks less credible to an AI than a competitor with 60 reviews from the last 12 months. Ask satisfied customers to leave a review after every completed job.
  • Accurate operating details. Hours, phone number, service categories, and address must match across your Yelp profile, your website, and every other directory. Inconsistent information confuses AI systems and reduces the chance you get cited.
  • Photos. Yelp licensed photos to OpenAI as part of this deal. A profile with no photos gives ChatGPT nothing visual to work with. Upload current, clear photos of your work, your storefront, or your team.
  • Owner responses to reviews. Responding to reviews, including negative ones, signals to both the platform and AI systems that your business is active and engaged. Profiles that go dark look abandoned.
  • Review quality, not just quantity. Reviews that mention specific services, locations, and outcomes give AI systems more to work with when matching your business to a user query.

The Google AI Overviews Side of the Equation

While the Yelp-OpenAI deal is big news for ChatGPT specifically, Google is making its own moves. As of late August 2026, Google is testing fully expanded AI Overviews for some queries, pushing traditional search results further down the page. Google's own guidance confirms that strong SEO fundamentals remain the foundation for appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clear service pages, accurate business information, and trustworthy content still matter.

Google also updated its spam policy documentation earlier this year to explicitly include tactics aimed at manipulating AI-generated answers. That means shortcuts designed to trick AI systems carry the same penalties as traditional spam. Build for real users, and the AI systems will follow.

A Practical Checklist for Michigan Small Businesses

You do not need a big budget to get started. Work through this list in the next two weeks:

  • Claim and fully complete your Yelp business profile if you have not already.
  • Check that your business name, address, phone number, and hours are identical on Yelp, Google Business Profile, and your website.
  • Add current photos to your Yelp profile, at least five to start.
  • Respond to every unanswered review on your profile, positive and negative.
  • Set up a simple system to ask customers for reviews after a completed transaction, a short text or email follow-up works well.
  • Search for your business in ChatGPT using the kinds of questions your customers would ask. Note what comes up and whether the information is accurate.
  • Review your website's service pages to make sure they use plain language and answer common customer questions directly near the top of the page.

The Bigger Picture

This Yelp-OpenAI deal is one example of a larger shift: AI assistants are increasingly pulling from licensed, structured data rather than crawling the open web in real time. For local businesses, that means your digital presence is no longer just your website. It is your entire data footprint across every platform where customers and AI systems can find information about you.

The businesses that show up consistently, accurately, and with strong review histories across those platforms are the ones that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity will recommend. The ones with incomplete, outdated, or ignored profiles will be passed over, often without the business owner ever knowing it happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT now show Yelp reviews when someone asks for a local business recommendation?

Yes. Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI. ChatGPT can now surface that data, including Yelp branding and links, when users ask local questions like 'find a plumber near me' or 'best roofer in Detroit.'

Do I need a Yelp account to show up in ChatGPT local answers?

Having a complete and accurate Yelp profile gives ChatGPT verified data to work with. Without it, ChatGPT has less reliable information about your business and may skip you entirely in local recommendations.

Can customers contact me directly through ChatGPT because of this deal?

Soon, yes. Yelp's 'Request a Quote' feature is being added to ChatGPT, which will let users reach local service providers for quotes without ever visiting your website.
